A Facebook user is writing about the case that happened in Portland, where ICE agents arrived at a baseball field and a coach planted himself in the dugout to protect his players.

The case revolves around the growing concern over ICE raids and the ways communities respond to protect each other.

Nadine Smith shared her reflections on Facebook, describing how she relies on Uber, Lyft, and public transit instead of owning a car.

Further, she explained how she uses her rides to discuss the importance of hope scrolling rather than doomscrolling.

She referenced several incidents of everyday bravery, including neighbors forming barriers around a school to prevent ICE from taking children.

Likewise, she also recounted the story of a Portland baseball coach who positioned himself in a dugout to shield his players when ICE agents arrived.

Hope in Action: Ordinary People Standing Up to Protect Their Communities

Smith focused on the bravery of ordinary people. She is talking about people showing courage and protecting each other in the face of danger or injustice, even in everyday situations.

She explained how seeing these actions can inspire others to act, and shared a conversation with her Uber driver, who said he would stop and intervene if he saw ICE harassing someone.

Further, she emphasized the importance of building moral courage and being ready to help others.

Many people reacted to her post, sharing their own thoughts and support.

One commenter said,

I’ve been thinking that in addition to pulling over, we need an information network that will tell us when we are needed to hop in our cars and join in protective actions.

Another shared,

Just came back from the FCNL annual meeting in DC. Was so inspirational hearing about the good work folks are doing, being on line with a couple hundred stalwart friends from around the US, all steadfast in moving the arc of justice in a better direction.

The majority of folks in the US are not in favor of the direction we’ve been pushed into.

Others expressed pride in Portland’s protective efforts or praised Smith’s writing, saying,

My God, Nadine, for me, this is the most impactful piece you have ever posted… Thank you for sharing this.

Collectively, these reactions reflect a strong sense of community, awareness, and commitment to standing up for others in moments of crisis.
