Many fans are eager to know about Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin’s sister. They learned about his sister after she attended one of Ilya’s games.
Ilya Sorokin is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL).
He played with the youth club before joining Metallurg Novokunznetsk and later continued his journey in the KHL with CSKA Moscow.
The Islanders goalie credits all his success to his family, who are his biggest supporter. His father paid a visit to the US for the first time to see Ilya play in NHL, and his sister is often seen attending his games.
Although his family members have kept a low profile, Sorokin always has words of praise for all of them.
Sister And Parents
Ilya Sorokin was born to his father, Igor Sorokin, and his mother. His father used to play hockey as a child and spent most of his life as a miner in Russia.
He also has a sister who is very supportive of his career. During his Gagarin Cup win, his sister was present on the rink, showing her support.
Sorokin ran to his sister after winning the title. When asked about how he felt sharing the moment with her, he said, “It’s a great feeling to have a family member by your side, one who supports you and roots for you. It multiplies the pleasure when you get to share these emotions with them.”
Many fans also speculated his sister to be his girlfriend.
Brother, Semyon Varlamov
Semyon Aleksandrovich Varlamov is a fellow Russian professional ice hockey goaltender who also plays for the New York Islanders of the NHL.
Ilya also refers to Varlamov as his big brother, from who he learns a lot.
The brotherhood between Ilya and Semyon is one of the highlights of the Islanders’ locker room.
When the head coach Barry Trotz was asked about the relationship between two goaltenders, he said, “Unbelievable.”
He further added, “I think as friends, as teammates and countrymen. If you know anything about Varly, Varly is a great mentor for not only a Russian goalie but any goalie in the NHL. He’s got a great demeanor.”
Sorokin’s emergence in the NHL has not intimidated Varlamov. The veteran goalie has taken Sorokin under his wing.
Ice Hockey Journey
Ilya initially started to play ice hockey as a forward and later started playing as a goalie. His first experience as a goaltender was not very pleasant, as he let in 13 goals.
Sorokin’s first hockey-related move was at 12, moving a couple of hours away from home from Mezhdurechensk to Novokuznesk.
The first couple of years after moving away from home was hard for young Ilya. But he believes these experiences helped him become mentally strong and develop his games.
The Russian player made his KHL debut at 17 with Metallurg. He became one of the top netminders in Russia and also won a Gagarin Cup in 2019.
He played in the KHL from 2012-2020 and was a multiple-time all-star.
The goaltender was drafted as the 78th overall pick in the 2014 NHL draft. However, it was only on July 13, 2020, he signed a one-year/entry-level contract with the New York Islanders.
Sorokin, featuring on All-Star Weekend, was excited to meet some of the NHL All-Stars, mainly Sydney Crosby.
Ilya was provided with another 1-year/$2 million deal for the 2020-21 season, the day after his entry-level contract was nullified.
The Islanders goalie inked a three-year/$12 million contract extension on September 1, 2021.
Besides, Sorokin is also an Olympic gold medalist; in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, the Russian team took home gold in a 4-3 overtime win over Germany.
He has also won three bronze medals at the IIHF World Championships (2016, 2017, and 2019).
