Frederick W. Thorne, a respected agricultural leader, loving family man, and retired executive, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, at the age of 87.
His death leaves behind a legacy rooted in integrity, innovation, and unwavering devotion to those he loved and mentored.
Born in Rochester, New York, Fred’s journey began on his family farm, where he cultivated a strong work ethic and deep curiosity—qualities that guided him throughout his life.
He went on to graduate from Cornell University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering, where he was not only an accomplished student but also an athlete, playing varsity soccer and joining the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
Fred’s professional life was defined by an impressive 40-year career with John Deere.
He served in multiple leadership roles—including Territory Manager, Division Sales Manager, and Sales Branch Manager in Dallas and Kansas City—before ultimately retiring as the company’s Global Director of Trademark, Event Management, and Licensed Products.
Fred brought vision, compassion, and mentorship to each role, earning the admiration of colleagues across the globe.
Retirement didn’t slow Fred down. His business acumen and passion for teamwork led him to NASCAR’s Roush Racing, where he served as a consultant in team management and licensed products.
At the same time, he reconnected with his agricultural roots by volunteering with Future Farmers of America (FFA), where he judged business competitions and mentored young agricultural leaders.
Fred also gave back in more personal ways. In Indiana, he was a devoted volunteer for the Carmel Swim Club, proudly supporting his grandchildren’s athletic endeavors.
His enthusiasm and encouragement made him a beloved figure among swimmers and families alike.
At the heart of Fred’s life was his family. He shared 62 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Judith “Judy.”
Together, they explored the world through sea cruises and created a lifetime of cherished memories.
Fred was a devoted father to four children—Jill (Jack Gorecki), Kristin (Mike Sherman), David (Kristin), and Susanne McLeod—and a proud grandfather to Claudia, Brett, Alex, Anna, Paige, Cassidy, and Stone.
Whether cheering from the sidelines, traveling to Disney World, or simply spending time together, Fred relished every moment with his family.
Fred’s warmth, generosity, and commitment to uplifting others made a lasting impression on all who knew him.
His leadership, both in the boardroom and in the community, will continue to inspire future generations.
