High School Career

Jack was never a basketball player during his childhood. He loved to play soccer outdoors, and his dad used to be his coach.

Before high school, he played volleyball for the National Team of New Zealand for U17, and high school was a place where his love for basketball began.

Jack is amazed at the transition from playing volleyball for the National team under 17 to playing basketball for National Basketball League (NBL) under 20.

Jack played under 17 on New Zealand’s National Volleyball Team in 2012. Previously, he used to play for the college-level Virginia Men’s Basketball Team. 

In 2013, Jack recognized his passion for basketball and debuted in the New Zealand NBL for the Super City Rangers. There he scored an average of 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in 14 games.

In 2014, he played for Waikato Pistons during the 2014 NBL, where he scored an average of 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds in nine games.

College Career

Salt signed a contract with Coach Tony Bennett in 2013 to play college basketball at Virginia.

During his first year on campus, he was given a redshirt to gain weight and stamina for his upcoming debut season in 2015. 

He spent most of the time with Isaiah Wilkins (a former athlete of the University of Virginia), his roommate.

In addition to that, Jack also received the very prestigious Crowley Scholarship awarded by Virginia for outstanding performance, leadership, and sportsmanship.

During his freshman year in college, he played in his redshirt and then gradually became a steady rotational player for the Cavaliers for the rest of his career.

In senior season Cavaliers started the season from being the first top seed to lose to a 16 seed in NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Cavalier bounced back during the regular season of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), where they won and claimed their number one seed.

In ACC, Jack played for 34 minutes straight and successfully scored 5 points and eight rebounds. In addition to that, Salt is also the first New Zealand native to win NCCA Division.

Unfortunately, Salt was not selected for the 2019 National Basketball Association (NBA), which led him to join the phoenix suns 2019 summer league team.
