Hailing from Chester, Virginia, Joe Sloan distinguished himself at Thomas Dale High School before advancing to higher education achievement.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Managerial Finance from East Carolina University (ECU) in December 2008, graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors.
Continuing his academic pursuits, Sloan completed his MBA in May 2010.
Throughout his academic journey at ECU, he consistently secured a position on the ECU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester.
On the field, Sloan showcased his talents in 41 games for East Carolina, serving as the holder on placekicks and backup quarterback.
Regarding his personal life, Joe exchanged wedding vows with Taylor Thomas. The couple has two daughters, Whitley and Lottie.
Coaching Journey
Beginning his coaching journey at South Florida, Joe Sloan started as an offensive quality control assistant for two years, from 2010 to 2011, followed by a subsequent year as a graduate assistant.
His association with Louisiana Tech began in 2013 when he assumed the role of inside receivers coach.
Before the 2019 season, Sloan’s dedication and skills earned him a promotion to co-offensive coordinator. By January 2020, he took on the responsibilities as the offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs.
During his nine-year tenure at Louisiana Tech, Sloan played an instrumental role in shaping some of college football’s formidable offenses.
His contributions saw the Bulldogs secure appearances in seven bowl games, achieve at least nine victories on four occasions, and clinch the Conference USA West title twice.
Recognized for his recruiting prowess and deep-rooted connections within Louisiana, Joe Sloan joined the LSU coaching team in January 2022.
Currently, he holds the position of quarterbacks coach for the Tigers.
In his debut season with LSU, Sloan’s expertise contributed significantly as the Tigers marked a 10-win season and secured the SEC Western Division title.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly has unveiled the successors for the bowl game following the departure of former offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock to Notre Dame.
Cortez Hankton and Joe Sloan have been designated co-coordinators for the upcoming ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin.
At LSU, Hankton serves as the coordinator for the passing game and holds the wide receivers coach position.
Meanwhile, Sloan is responsible for coaching the quarterbacks for the Tigers.
Expressing his confidence in the duo, Brian Kelly stated,
“I’m confident in Cortez and Joe’s ability to run the offense. They will collaborate in the passing game and work with Brad (Davis) and Frank (Wilson) in the running game. They are a cohesive group of coaches and I’m excited about this opportunity for them. I know they will do a good job.”
Both Hankton and Sloan are embarking on their second season with LSU.
