During his collegiate years from 2004 to 2007, Johnson was a walk-on quarterback at the University of North Carolina. He earned his degree in mathematics and computer science from the same institution.

His coaching journey began at Boston College in 2009, where he started as a graduate assistant. By 2011, Johnson had risen to the position of tight ends coach at Boston College.

Transitioning to the NFL, Johnson joined the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant on February 10, 2012. His role evolved over time, and by 2018, he had become the wide receivers coach for the Dolphins.

On February 10, 2012, he was named the offensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins and became wide receivers coach in 2018.

In 2019, Johnson moved to the Detroit Lions as an offensive quality control coach in 2019. Since then, he has taken on various roles within the organization, including tight ends coach and passing game coordinator.
