The San Antonio Gunslingers just announced that Jonathan Bane, a legendary indoor and arena football quarterback, will be their head coach for the 2026 season.
Bane, known for his records and comebacks, is ready to use his passion and leadership in this new role.
Jonathan Bane’s Love for Football Started in Texas
Bane first laced up his cleats for the Rogers High School Eagles in Rogers, Texas.
Later, he transferred to Temple High School, where he played for the Wildcats and caught the eye of college recruiters.
Those early years shaped him into the player and leader he would become.
In 2010, Bane took his talents to Dakota Wesleyan University.
There, he became a four-year starter and a three-year team captain. He left an incredible mark on the school, setting records in every passing category.
His arm strength, quick thinking, and leadership made him a star on the field and a respected figure off it.
Bane’s professional career kicked off in 2015 with the Richmond Raiders in the Professional Indoor Football League.
He wasted no time making an impact, earning the Offensive Player of the Year award after smashing multiple league records. That was just the beginning.
Over the next 10 years, Bane played for several teams, including the Tampa Bay Storm, Maine Mammoths, Jacksonville Sharks, Carolina Cobras, Frisco Fighters, Orlando Predators, and West Texas Desert Hawks.
One of his proudest moments came in 2019 when he led the Jacksonville Sharks to a National Arena League (NAL) championship.
Bane retired as the NAL’s all-time leading passer, with an impressive 72-20 win-loss record as a starting quarterback.
That’s one of the best win percentages in indoor and arena football history! His ability to read the game and deliver clutch passes made him a fan favorite and a tough opponent
Bane’s career wasn’t all smooth sailing.
In 2023, while playing for the Orlando Predators, he suffered a serious neck injury. It required surgery and months of tough rehabilitation.
Many wondered if he’d ever play again, but Bane’s determination was stronger than ever.
In 2024, he made an inspiring comeback, leading the West Texas Desert Hawks in the Arena Football League (AFL).
Sadly, his playing days ended later that year after a career-ending spinal cord injury. But Bane’s love for football couldn’t be stopped.
In 2025, he joined the San Antonio Gunslingers as their Quarterback and Special Teams Coordinator
He quickly showed his knack for coaching, bringing energy, strategy, and leadership to the team.
Players and fans alike were inspired by his grit and knowledge of the game.
Now, in 2026, Jonathan Bane is taking the next step as the head coach of the San Antonio Gunslingers.
This role feels like a perfect fit. With his years as a record-breaking quarterback and his recent coaching experience, Bane knows the indoor game inside and out.
He’s ready to lead the Gunslingers with the same passion that defined his playing career.
Gunslingers CEO and owner, Don Rackler, had this to say-
“Jonathan Bane was an outstanding member of our coaching staff this past season and exemplified all the characteristics of what we feel a Gunslingers head coach should exhibit. Dedication, strong moral character and a diligence to do everything needed to be the best. I am excited to see what Jonathan will help us get accomplished in 2026!”
