Jonathan Marchessault was born in Cap-Rouge, Quebec, Canada, on December 27, 1990.

His birth name is Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, but he dropped “Audy” from his name at the beginning of the 2013-14 season.

To begin with his hockey career, Marchessault played for an amateur ice hockey team in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments in 2003 and 2004.

In addition, Marchessault joined the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) when he was sixteen years old and played his entire junior hockey career with the Quebec Remparts.

Subsequently, in the 2009–10 season, Jonathan won the Gaétan Duchesne Trophy as the best defensive player.

Moreover, on December 13, 2010, he also earned the Player of the Week award in QMJHL and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL).

Jonathan Marchessault | Professional Career

Connecticut Whale

On a recommendation by Dean Stork, Jonathan Marchessault signed his first professional contract with the Connecticut Whale of New York Rangers’ American Hockey League (AHL).

As a result, Marchessault joined former Rempart teammates Ryan Bourque and Kelsey Tessier. Soon, Marchessault played his professional debut game in 2011–12 with the Whales.

As for his second professional game on October 9, 2011,  Marchessault scored the game-winning penalty goal against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Further, on October 22, 2011, he scored his first professional non-shootout goal against the Springfield Falcons.

On top of it, Marchessault helped the Whales lead 64 points, 40 assists, and 24 goals in his first professional season.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Despite the success with the Whales, Marchessault decided to sign a three-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He played the 2013- 14 season for Columbus’ AHL affiliate Springfield Falcons. He led the team in scoring, not surprisingly, received the First Team AHL All-Star award.

However, on March 5, 2014, in the second season with Columbus, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning along with his teammate, Dalton Smith, in exchange for Dana Tyrell and Matt Taormina.

Tampa Bay Lightning

After the trade, Jonathan played for the Lightning’s affiliate team, Syracuse Crunch.

He played 64 games with Syracuse before the Lightning called him for the final regular-season game on April 11, 2015, to replace an injured team member.

Therefore, on April 11, he scored his first NHL goal in a winning game against the Boston Bruins. Likewise, he became the game’s first star by the attending media.

The next day after the victorious game,  Marchessault re-joined Syracuse to finish the rest of the regular season.

However, he was recalled because the Crunches were eliminated from the AHL playoffs.

Marchessault replaced Ryan Callahan due to an injury and made his Stanley Cup playoff debut.

What’s more, the Lightning won against the Montreal Canadiens and eliminated them from the playoffs.

Florida Panthers

As they say, nothing is permanent; Jonathan Marchessault gave his resignation to the Lightning after playing three seasons with them.

On July 1, 2016, he signed a two-year contract with the Florida Panthers for the 2016–17 season.

After the defeat against the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference semifinals in Edmonton, Alberta, Jonathan received several insulting comments from the fans on his verified Instagram account.
