Josh Howard | Early Life and Family

On April 28, 1980, Josh Howard was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His mother’s name is Nancy Henderson. Likewise, his father’s name is Kevin Robinson. 

Howard wasn’t a healthy baby at birth because he had deformed legs that curved inwards. Following his mother’s decision, the doctors broke his leg bones and re-set them so that they grew straight.

It wasn’t easy, but there was always love around Joshua. His grandmother, Helen Howard, lived at the 1500 address (street not revealed), and his mother, Nancy Henderson, lived right down the block.

Josh’s mother thought it would be better for him to live with his grandmother. However, his mother was still a big part of his life.

The player remains close to both women, particularly his grandmother, who still lives in the same house he grew up in. Helen refers to him as “my Joshua.”

On the other hand, Josh’s father, Kevin Robinson, abandoned his family when he was an infant, and he didn’t speak to him again until he was 11 years old.

High School Career

Josh went to Glenn High School in Kernersville, North Carolina. At Glenn, he was a senior’s first-Team All-State selection and averaged six blocks per game while shooting 70%.

Likewise, during his junior and senior years, the player averaged a double-double and won the Frank Spencer Award (for the best player in Northwest North Carolina) twice.

The player attended Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia, where he averaged a double-double of 19.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

Josh led Hargrave to a 27–3 record while shooting 56% from the field. He also shot 44 percent from the three-point range and 85 percent from the free-throw line.

Further, Josh also took part in the ACC–SEC game between newcomers from both conferences. The player scored 14 points in 15 minutes to help the ACC defeat the SEC 145–115.

Arrest

Josh Howard was handcuffed outside a BP gas station just a night before his SAT exam during his senior year.

College Career

The player chose Wake Forest over many other colleges in 1999 because of its proximity to his family and friends. He studied sociology with a minor in international studies.

Josh appeared in all 36 games during his rookie season, starting all but two. He led the team in steals with 44 and finished fourth in scoring 9.1 points per game.

His season-high came against Duke in an ACC tournament game. Josh scored 19 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. 

Professional Basketball Career 

The Dallas Mavericks selected Howard in the first round of the NBA draft in 2003. (29th overall).

The player set a career-high in scoring (15.6 points) and three-point field goal percentage (.429) while averaging 6.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game in 2005–06. However, due to an injury, he was limited to 59 games.

Josh was traded to the Washington Wizards on February 13, 2010, along with James Singleton, Drew Gooden, and Quinton Ross, in exchange for Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler, and DeShawn Stevenson.

Josh underwent surgery on March 16, 2010, after tearing his ACL against the Chicago Bulls on February 22. The player was scheduled to be out for 6 to 8 months.

On December 15, 2011, Josh agreed to a one-year contract with Utah Jazz worth approximately $3 million. Likewise, On November 15, 2012, Howard decided to a one-year contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the veteran’s minimum.

After sustaining a torn ACL on December 14, 2012, he was waived on December 20, 2012. Following that, Josh signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs on October 25, 2013.

He was, however, released the next day. Soon after, the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League, the Spurs’ D-League affiliate, acquired Howard on October 31.

However, the contract didn’t last long. Due to a season-ending injury, the Toros waived him on February 27, 2014. Following that, Josh joined the New Orleans Pelicans for the 2014 NBA Summer League in July of 2014.

Josh Howard | The ‘Marijuana’ Incident

In April 2008, just hours before Game 3 of the Mavericks’ first-round series against the New Orleans Hornets, Josh told Michael Irvin on ESPN Radio 103.3 FM that he smoked marijuana in the offseason. 

The player also mentioned that while he would not smoke during the season even if the NBA did not conduct random testing, Josh did not think that was stopping him from doing his job.

Moreover, Josh described marijuana use as his personal choice. The player had previously spoken with TrueHoop blogger Henry Abbot about his marijuana use and its possible connection to his selection as the 29th pick in the 2003 NBA draft.

Following the incident, the player later came out on his website and apologized to his fans, the Mavericks, and the NBA.

He stated and discussed the contentious issue with members of the media, and by doing so, he made a mistake. He further added that he considered himself fortunate to be playing basketball in the League.
