Julian Edelman was born on May 22, 1986, in Red City, California, to supporting parents Francis Edelman and Angie Edelman. He grew up with two siblings, sister Nicole Edelman and brother Jason Edelman.

Looking at the academic records, Julian graduated from Woodside High School in 2005. After spending one year at the College of San Mateo, Edelman could not complete his degree.

Later, the former NFL player joined Kent State University to earn a degree in business management. He completed his degree in 2019 after 13 years of joining Ken State.

In one of the interviews, Julian spoke about why a university degree was necessary for him. He said, “It is important to me that I make my parents proud as I fulfill a promise that I made to them that I would, one day, be a college graduate.”

Early Career

Julian started his career as a quarterback at the high school, where he had 2,237 yards, 29 touchdowns, 964 yards, and 13 touchdowns rushing.

While attending the College of San Mateo, he threw 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns. After spending one year at San Mateo, Edelman transferred to Kent State University and was three years starter as a quarterback.

Being a Golden Flashes leading passer in his senior year, the QB completed 56% of his passes, i.e., 153 of 275 passes for 1820 yards with 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Professional Career

Considering his collegiate exploits, it was a shame that he wasn’t even invited to showcase his abilities at the 2009 NFL. Despite being rejected by the NFL, he started private workouts for various teams.

Hence, the New England Patriots selected him in the 7th round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Later on, he signed a 4-year contract with the Patriots on July 16, 2009.

He finished his rookie season with 37 receptions for 359 yards and one touchdown. He also made six punt returns and 11 kickoff returns, gaining 304 yards in all on 17 returns. 

For the next 3 seasons (2010-2012), Julian continued working and improving various game aspects. He signed a contract extension with the Patriots on April 10, 2013, for one year. 

In 2013, the wide receiver set history, recording 105 receptions for 156 yards and six touchdowns, and led the Patriots to the AFC Championship game.

The Patriots defeated Seattle Seahawks to win Super Bowl XLIX receiving 109 yards on nine receptions.

On March 15, 2014, Edelman signed a contract extension with the Patriots on a four-year deal worth $17 million. 

While playing against New York Gaints on November 15, he suffered an injury to his left foot that kept him away for six to eight weeks.

Despite foot surgery, Julian’s efforts to win Super Bowl LI and many other important were priceless. This made him rank 87th on the ‘NFL Top 100 Players of 2016. 

Following an ACL injury in 2017, he missed the entire season game and was placed on the injured reserve list. Julian made his comeback in 2018 against Los Angeles Rams, where he caught 141 yards in the Super Bowl LIII.

Further

Julian resigned from a two-year contract with the Patriots on May 21, 2019. He ended the regular season with 100 receptions for 1,117 yards and six receiving touchdowns.

On October 31, 2020, Edelman was placed in an injury reserve after undergoing knee surgery. He was expected to return on December 21, but head coach Bill Belichick announced that he wouldn’t be activated before the end of the season. 

Retirement

After suffering from different injuries and surgeries, the wide receiver announced his retirement on April 12, 2021.

He thought of retiring from his career after the Patriots decided to discontinue the contract with Julian due to his physical weakness.
