Early Life & Childhood 

Julie Ertz was born in Mesa, Arizona. Born to Kristi and David Johnston, she grew up with her sister Melaine Johnston. She got introduced to soccer via her local AYSO region. 

Both the sister played for Sereno Soccer Club in Phoenix. Melanie played for the 1990s while Julie played for the 1992 side. 

According to her, Sereno was a nationally known club with alumni who played in college, on professional teams, and for national teams. Ertz played from 2004 to 2010 for the section on the U13 through U19 groups. 

In addition, she was the captain of the team and won the state title nine times during her time there. She attended Dobson High School from 2006 to 2010 in Mesa. There she volunteered as an athletic trainer all four years. 

She devoted all her time playing for Sereno, due to which she didn’t play for the soccer team at the school. Moreover, Ertz was a member of the National Honor Society while at Dobson.

Julie Ertz: Experience in Santa Clara Broncos 

Julie majored in communications at Santa Clara University. In addition, she also played as a midfielder for the Bronco’s women’s scooter team. As a college freshman, Ertz played in 20 games, assembling 1519 minutes of playing in 2010. 

During the end of the season, she set the record of the third-most shots with 31 and escorted the team in assists with five. Ertz was named WCC freshman of the year. 

She received Soccer America All-Freshman First-Team, WCC All-Freshman team honors, All-WCC Second-Team, and NSCAA All-West Region Second-Team

In 2011 as a sophomore, she started all 21 games with four assists and nine goals for the Broncos. She was a semi-finalist of the WCC Hermann Trophy. 

She started 14 of the 15 games she played and led the team with five assists and eight goals in 2012. In addition, Ertz was named US Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year. 

She played in 22 games and led the team with four game-winning goals and eight assists. In the season, she made a total of 12 goals, and in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament against UC at Berkeley, she recorded an assist. 

In addition, she was also named College Sports Madness WCC Player of the Year and WCC Player of the Year. 

Julie Ertz: National Teams

Early National Teams

Julie went to the U14 National Identification Camp, United States, in 2006. And in 2009, she joined the U18 national team training camp from May 30 to June 7 at The Home Depot Center located in Carson, California. 

She competed against international under 20 youth soccer in 2012. Moreover, she scored a goal against Switzerland at the La Manga Tournament, Spain. She had four goals and 13 caps for the U20 team in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2012. 

In the 2012 Japan U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Ertz was a captain of the US team. In addition, she won the CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship, 2012  along the way. She won the bronze award as well. 

Ertz competed in the Four Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain, where she played for the U23 team. Additionally, the team beat England in the final, winning the tournament on March 7. 

Senior National Teams 

In January 2013, Ertz was brought forward to the national team. At that time, she was on the training camp for the 29-player roster matching against Scotland. Julie first appeared for the national team in the first match on February 9, 2013. 

Ertz traveled internationally with the national team for the game against Netherland and Germany. She played as a midfield in the match against the Netherlands. The US won the game, 3-1. 

She began 2014 at a national team training camp at US Soccer’s National Training Canter in California. She was selected to a 22-player roster for a game against Canada in May.

Moreover, she was chosen to a 19-player roster for a game against Switzerland. During that game, the US won the match by 4-1. 

At the end of August, Ertz went to the national team for a training camp to prepare two games against Mexico and CONCACAF Women’s qualifying tournament 2014.

She appeared in the opening match of the tournament against China on December 10. However, the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Likewise, the final game also ended in a 0-0 draw which was against Brazil. 

Julie Ertz: Club 

Julie signed with Chicago Red Stars for the 2014 season. She first appeared for the team on April 19 in a match against Western New York Flash. In the 59th minute, she scored the only goal of the game. 

In the 2014 season, Julie started in 21 matches and scored two goals. She earned NWSL Rookie of the Year during the 2014 season. 

However, in 2015 she missed most of the NWSL season due to arrangements with the United States women’s team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Canada.

Julie returned to the Red Stars on July 22 during a match against the Boston Breakers, ending in a 2–1 victory. She played 990 minutes for the Red Stars and made 11 appearances during the 2015 season. 

In addition, she won the NWSL Best XI following the 2015 season. However, during the 2016 season, Ertz made twelve appearances for the Red Stars. After that, she joined the national team to prepare for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. 

Ertz and the Chicago Red Stars first appeared in the NWSL Championship against the North Carolina Courage in the 2019 season.

Julie Ertz: National and International Games

FIFA Women’s World Cup Matches 

Julie began 2015 at a 21-day training camp, and she was selected to the 24-player team that would travel to Europe for matches against England and France in February. 

Furthermore, on February 21, she was selected to the 25-player roster for the Algarve Cup in Portugal in 2015.

In the game against France, she scored her first international goal and helped the team win the tournament by 2-0. 

In 2015, Ertz was selected to the 23-player roster representing the United States at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Fortunately, the United States won the World Cup title. In addition, Ertz earned the FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star Team

In 2017, Ertz was transferred from center back to a defensive center midfield position. She completely adapted to the change in role and earned the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.

On February 19, 2016, the United States qualified for the Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro after a win against Trinidad and Tobago. The US defeated Canada and won the tournament by 2-0 on February 21. 

Ertz made her Olympic debut on August 3 in the match against New Zealand. However, she didn’t appear in the remaining two group matches of the team due to a sore groin. 

She came back for the team’s quarterfinal game against Sweden, which the US lost the game in penalty kicks. 

Ertz played her 100th game for the United States and got victory over England with a score of 2–0 at the first SheBelieves Cup competition on March 5, 2020.
