Just Like Legendary George Koonce, Las Vegas Raiders’ Star Malcolm Koonce is also Making His Mark In The NFL!

Despite sharing surnames and playing in the NFL, George Koonce and Malcolm Koonce are not related.

George Koonce was recently in the news after being inducted as an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma on July 19, 2025.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Koonce has garnered significant attention after making an outstanding comeback in 2025, following a torn ACL and meniscus injury during practice in 2024.

Malcolm Koonce’s Father, Jeffrey Koonce, Was Wrongfully Convicted Of A Crime He Never Committed!

The NFL carries a revered history, offering a stage for some of the most outstanding football players to showcase their athletic prowess.

In this new generation, many players are descendants of legendary NFL athletes.

Fans hold high expectations for them, believing they will carry forward the legacy left by their remarkable forebears.

Hence, it is no surprise that fans speculated Malcolm Koonce was related to the former NFL linebacker, George Koonce, when the Raiders selected him in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft.

George Koonce was a revered football player who won the Super Bowl champion (XXXI) and was a Second Team All-South Independent (1990).

Even after retiring from the NFL, George continued building a legacy for himself and his family outside the league. In 1999, he founded the George Koonce Sr. Foundation, which provides educational, athletic, artistic, and social opportunities to underprivileged children.

Then, he earned a Master’s in Sports Management from East Carolina University (ECU). He also became one of only two Packers players in history with a Ph.D after earning a Ph.D. from Marquette University. Hence, he was nicknamed “The Doctor of Defense.”

Furthermore, George also worked in athletic and university leadership roles, alongside co-authoring the book Is There Life After Football? – Surviving the NFL. With such a remarkable career and legacy, George truly made his late wife, Tunisia, and their two children, Trey and Arienna, proud.

He lost his wife to cancer in 2010 and had to resign from his position as the UWM Athletics Director to become the principal caretaker for his two children, who were just 3 and 12 at that time. Therefore, George Koonche is inspirational not just for his athleticism but also for his academic and philanthropic contributions.

Furthermore, there is no definitive connection between him and Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Malcolm Koonce, aside from their shared surname.

While George is a native of North Carolina, Malcolm was born on June 6, 1998, more than 500 miles away in Peekskill, New York.

His father was Jeffrey Koonce, who was accused of participating in an 1981 armed robbery at Vernon Stars Rod and Gun Club in Mount Vernon, New York.

Three people were injured during the robbery by shotgun pellets, and patrons were robbed of cash and jewelry.

Despite Jeffrey maintaining his innocence and insisting that he was nowhere near the club that night, he served nearly eight years in prison.

Later, investigations by the Westchester County DA in 2024–2025 uncovered major issues with the police investigation. They found that Jeffrey’s photo was enlarged in a lineup, making him stand out.

Furthermore, the Mount Vernon police coerced the only witness into identifying Jeffrey as the main suspect. Later, they said they couldn’t actually see faces clearly in the dark club.

The police also did not interview alibi witnesses who could prove Jeffrey was elsewhere. However, one of the detectives involved in Koonce’s case later went to prison for unrelated corruption, and another lied during pretrial hearings.

Finally, in 2024, a suburban New York judge vacated Jeffrey Koonce’s robbery and weapons convictions and dismissed the indictment.

Although the court acknowledged serious flaws in the investigation, it did not officially rule on police misconduct.

When the judge cleared Jeffrey’s name after 40 years, he expressed relief. Moreover, he described how his children suffered from society’s mistaken view of him, and the court’s decision is a vindication for them.

“I feel like a burden has been lifted off my shoulder.”

Jeffrey Koonce’s story highlights how justice can be delayed but still can be achieved. While Malcolm and his father had a happy ending, they still had to bear the burden and grief of wrongful conviction.

Additional Information

  • George Koonce grew up in poverty, where his mother made less than $10,000 per year while supporting four kids.
  • As of April 2025, George is the Senior Vice President of the Office of University Relations at Marian University.
  • Malcolm Koonce reportedly has siblings, including Dejuan Koonce, a retired New York state trooper.
