Kali Reis partner, Brian Cohen, has been by her side since 2016. The couple tied the knot in 2021 and are not only husband and wife but also fighter and trainer.
Reis is a Native American woman and claims Cape Verdean ancestry. She began her boxing journey in 2008 and made her acting debut in the movie Catch The Fair One in 2021.
A victim of sexual assault at the young age of 12, Kali Reis has gone through many highs and lows in her life. Growing up, in a religious household, Kali also had a hard time accepting her queer identity.
The former World Champion, Kali Reis has been away from the boxing scene since 2021, and that time length will probably extend. Reis recently starred in HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, and it has already received critical acclaim.
Kali Reis Partner: Does The Boxer Have A Husband Or Wife?
Kali Reis has a partner in Brian Cohen, with whom she tied the knot in 2021. Previously, Kali had said she was part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Raised by a Christian mom, Reis said it had been difficult for her to embrace her identity. She even joked in the interview, asking if she had lost her gay card because she was now married to a man.
Before becoming Kali’s husband, Brian was her trainer. He then became her manager and then her best friend. It was Kali who first reached out to Brian through email.
But Brian only entered Kali’s circle in 2016, when she fought against Maricela Cornejo in Auckland, New Zealand, for the vacant WBC middleweight title. Kali bumped into Brian during the fight in New Zealand and asked him to work in her corner.
The Philly native Brian Cohen is a former boxer, having started as a professional boxer in 1995. The 47-year-old has fought in 18 bouts and has a 16-2 record.
After putting his boxing gloves aside, Brian became a trainer and later a boxing manager. Brian founded Team Empire Boxing, which focuses on women’s boxing. As mentioned on their Instagram bio, the company has 38 champions as of 2021.
In an interview with the Philly Voice, Kali said, “Brian saw something in me that I couldn’t see in myself, and I think it started from there.”
After her wedding to Brian, Kali became a stepmom to Alanna. She has previously opened up about her reproductive health issue. In her interview with Life’s Tough, Kali said she failed like a failure for not being able to do the “one thing she was put on the earth to do.”
Brian has been Kali’s biggest supporter in the entire ordeal. Like Kali previously said, “No one holds the A-side sway over the other.”
Acceptance Took Time For Kali
The boxer-turned-actor Kali Reis didn’t have the perfect childhood. Her father would be barely around, and she relied on her older siblings to raise her.
By age 11, Kali had started smoking and selling weeds with her friends to pass time. A year later, Kali met with an unfortunate incident as a boy two or three years older than her took advantage of her.
This trauma led her to start drinking alcohol. She was sexually assaulted twice, once on a waterbed and the other time in a shed. Kali didn’t tell anyone she had been taken advantage of, as she felt embarrassed.
One of her brothers found out about the incident years later. Kali said her brother wanted to kill the man, but she couldn’t let that happen.
Kali started to find peace when she started opening up about what had happened to her with younger girls who had gone through the same trauma as she did.
The former boxer said she has never told Brian who assaulted her. Cohen has previously warned Kali that if ever found out that person’s identity, he would disembowel him and eat his intestines.
Kali began boxing at age 13 and was trained by her mom’s friend, Domingo Monroe. By age 22, Kali became a professional boxer, and she used it as an outlet to channel her anger.
In recent years, Kali has said her self-esteem has grown. She has learned a lot of self-worth with Brian as her best friend, telling her things she didn’t know about herself.
