Her journey to becoming a basketball star began at Hope High School, where her remarkable talent and dedication to the game earned her a coveted spot on the prestigious all-state basketball team.

Katie continued her success at the University of North Dakota and helped her team reach four NCAA tournaments, winning two North Central Conference crowns and three consecutive national championships.

These incredible achievements solidified her status as one of the greatest players ever to don the UND jersey.

Moreover, she was the Director of Mayville State University’s Student Success and Disability Services. In addition to her university role, Richards also took on the role of varsity boys basketball coach at May-Port-CG High School in 2009.

Katie Richards’ life was tragically cut short in a devastating rollover crash near Reynolds in Traill County, leaving her community engulfed in profound grief and sorrow.

On November 2, 2023, Katie Richards met a devastating car accident near Reynolds, North Dakota, which led to her untimely death.

According to reports, Katie was driving her 2021 Buick Enclave southward on 22nd Avenue NE, about eight miles to the west of Reynolds, when a tragic incident occurred.

Around 12:10 a.m., her vehicle suddenly veered off the road, leading to a series of rollovers that resulted in severe and devastating consequences.

Law enforcement authorities swiftly arrived at the scene after the accident was reported, but tragically, Katie was pronounced dead at the site.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol’s investigation revealed that Katie was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Shockingly, they discovered that she was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred. Besides this, other details surrounding the accident remain under investigation.

Her sudden departure has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, both personally and through her contributions to the world of sports and education.
