The 2016 Olympic bronze medalist started his junior career at 13 and won several titles, including the Raid 21 Tournament (2004), Junior French Open (2006), and Sony Ericsson Open (2007).

In 2006, he qualified for the ITF Futures event, and after his ATP main draw debut, the Japanese player qualified for the Indianapolis Tennis Championships in July 2007.
