A junior varsity football game on Thursday evening in Michigan ended in a serious injury for a Lakeshore High School player.
15-Year-old Colton Comer Mims, a standout football player at Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, Michigan, was hospitalized after being blocked and then jumped on by a player from the opposing Kalamazoo Central team during the third quarter of the matchup between the two schools.
The doctors determined that Colton had broken his spine in two places after the incident.
Furthermore, the incident has left Colton Comer Mims’ parents, Courtney Mims and Ryan Comer, heartbroken.
Courtney, who was cheering her son, witnessed the devastating moment with her own eyes.
The incident, captured on video by Colton’s mother, Courtney Mims, shows the opposing player, wearing number 73, jumping on Colton during the play.
In an interview with WSBT, Courtney recalled her reaction after seeing her son was injured.
“And I at first was like, is that my son? And as soon as it clicked that it was, I couldn’t be stopped. I had to go down there. It was I’ve never felt anything like it. I’ve never been as upset or shaken up as I was over something for my son,”

She further added that her son has been released from the hospital and is now recovering at home, and revealed that he won’t be playing this season and is unsure if he could ever play again.
“”He’s out at least for this season. We don’t know if he’s going to be able to play again. He should and will make a full recovery.”
Courtney is also speaking out to raise awareness about the dangers of plays in youth football.
“These boys are high school boys. They’re 15 years old. The game means a lot to them. It’s their whole life right now. They’re there from before I get up to go to work in the morning till after dinner, putting in the work and for somebody to try to take that from somebody doing so much is awful for me to see.”
Colton Comer Mims and His Parents, Courtney and Ryan, Are Michigan Natives
The 15-year-old Colton Comer Mims was born as the only son of Courtney Mims and Ryan Comer, both Michigan natives.
Although his parents are separated, they mutually raised Colton to become a great son and an amazing athlete.
Furthermore, both his mother, Courtney, and father, Ryan, an Eau Claire, Michigan native, often share pictures of their son on social media expressing their love and pride for him.
Colton’s mother, Courtney Mims, who lives in Saint Joseph, Michigan, with her longtime partner, Ethan Fellows, in Saint Joseph, Michigan works at Grand Crossing.
Courtney studied Secondary Education English at Lake Michigan College.
While very little information about Colton’s father, Ryan Comer’s professional life is available, as he prefers to maintain a low profile, he is happily married to McKenzie Burbach, Colton’s stepmother.
The couple is blessed with a son, Colton’s younger brother. Although McKenzie didn’t give birth to Colton Comer Mims, she loves him as if he were her own child and often expresses her affection for him.
Mckenzie Burbach is a photographer who runs her own photography company, McKenzie Renee Photography.
Simultaneously, Mckenize works as a fifth-grade teacher at Lybrook Elementary School. She studied photography at College of DuPage.
Furthermore, the entire Michigan community is sending strength to Colton Comer Mims and his parents and is praying for his speedy recovery.
