Larry Hughes | Early Life

Larry Darnell Hughes Sr. was born on January 23, 1979, in St. Louis, Missouri. He is the son of Vanessa Hughes (mother). Unfortunately, his father’s whereabouts are unknown.

In addition, Hughes had a brother Justin Hughes who died in 2006 due to heart failure at the age of 20. But, Larry’s brother was born with a heart defect and had heart transplantation.

Larry attended Christian Brothers College High School (CBC) and was part of its basketball team. He was one of the key members to led his school to win the state title in 1997.

After a stellar high school career, Larry left his college imprints. He enrolled at St. Louis University. He guided the St. Louis Eagles to the AAU National Championship. 

In his college career, he had groundbreaking records and wins. Thus, Larry is widely considered one of the greatest St. Louis basketball players of all time. 

Larry Hughes | Professional Career

After a stellar college career, Larry enrolled in the 1998 NBA draft. He embarked on his NBA journey after he was picked in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played for them for two years before playing for the Golden State Warriors.

His peak career was with Washington Wizards. While playing with the Wizards, he became renowned as a versatile and athletic guard with great defensive ability. Thus, Larry was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team in 2004–05.

However, he later signed to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005. Hughes received the first Austin Carr Good Guy Award on May 2, 2006, given to the Cavaliers player with an excellent public image.

Before retiring as an NFL player, he briefly played with Chicago Bulls, the New York Knicks, the Sacramento Kings, the Charlotte Bobcats, and the Orlando Magic.
