Randy McCoy, a legendary basketball coach, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at the age of 69. His wife, Cherri K. McCoy, was always with him, supporting and encouraging him.
After an illustrious 46-year coaching career, Randy cemented his legacy as one of the region’s most successful basketball coaches.
Randy’s remarkable journey included a 15th Region Championship at Elkhorn City and guiding Pikeville College to the NAIA Final Four in 2001.
Similarly, he captured the All “A” Classic title with University Heights Academy in 2008 and secured another 15th Region All “A” Championship at East Ridge High School in 2017.
Though Randy “retired” from coaching in Kentucky in 2019 and moved to Florida, his passion for the game quickly drew him back to the sidelines.
He returned as the head boys basketball coach at Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, Florida, proving that his love for coaching is far from over.
His coaching journey began decades ago when Wayne Martin, then-head coach of Pikeville College, gave him his first break as a team manager.
Those formative years under Martin and nine more at Morehead State laid the foundation for his success and transformed him into a winning coach.
Unfortunately, his tragic demise saddened the whole community, and many remembered him in their heartfelt posts.
East Kentucky lost a legend today. With over 40 years coaching on the sidelines, Coach Randy McCoy changed the lives of many young athletes around the state. He finished out his coaching career as an Island Coast Gator in Florida, his final accomplishment was a district title this past February. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McCoy family. RIP, Coach.

In memory of Coach Randy McCoy. My heart broke this afternoon as I heard the news. Randy was a coach loved by everyone. He coached, taught and encouraged many young people in our area. He won the District Tournament in Florida this past Feb. I couldn’t help to think as I sat at the red light this evening about what a glad reunion Randy had when he crossed into heaven. And the first person I thought of was Buddy Butler. I am sure there were big smiles!! RIP Coach Randy. We will see you on the courts in heaven.
