Peter “Coach” George Melchiono, a beloved high school teacher, dedicated hockey coach, and pillar of his community, passed away on January 9, 2026, at the age of 92.
He was peacefully reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Joan, the love of his life and greatest teammate.
News of George Melchiono’s death has touched many hearts across Massachusetts, especially among those whose lives he shaped through education and sports.
Born on February 11, 1933, to the late Michael and Louise (Porter) Melchiono, Pete grew up in Medford, Massachusetts.
There, he built the strong foundations of his lifelong values, faith, family, discipline, and service.
A proud 1950 graduate of Malden Catholic High School, he went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.
After his military service, Pete attended Merrimack College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He later completed his master’s degree at Boston College.
It was at Merrimack College that Pete met the woman who would become his partner in everything, Joan Hewett.
A graduate of Punchard High School in Andover, Massachusetts, Joan also attended Merrimack, where their love story began.
They married in August 1954 and built a beautiful life together.
Joan worked as the owner and manager of Sign of the Owl Bookstore in Osterville, Massachusetts, and later as a longtime member of the Osterville Village Library staff.
The couple shared a deep bond until Joan’s passing on March 28, 2020, at AgeRegency Nursing Home after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Above all, Pete was a devoted family man. He and Joan raised four children: Michael, Gina, John, and Paul.
Pete often spoke with deep gratitude about his blessings, once saying,
“I was a blessed soul with a great mom, dad and a great, great wife, great children, and living on Cape Cod.”
Those who knew him would agree that he lived a full, meaningful life filled with love, purpose, and faith.
Pete dedicated his professional life to education and athletics.
He shaped countless young lives as a teacher and coach at Wilmington High School, Chelmsford High School, Merrimack College, and finally at Barnstable High School.
From 1973 until his retirement in 1995, he taught and coached on Cape Cod, leaving an incredible legacy.
Known as “Coach,” Pete was admired for his hockey expertise, honesty, guidance, and belief in his players.
His impact on athletics was honored many times over.
Pete was inducted into the Merrimack College Athletic Hall of Fame, the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame.
In 2001, the American Hockey Coaches Association presented him with the prestigious John Mariucci Award, recognizing his lasting contributions to the sport and the young athletes he guided.
During his 22 years as head hockey coach at Barnstable High School, he compiled an impressive record of 275-131-28, won eight league titles, and led his teams to two Massachusetts state championships (Division 2 in 1979-80 and Division 1 in 1990-91).
Pete’s influence extended far beyond wins and records. He was a mentor who instilled discipline, teamwork, and character in generations of students and players.
Even in his later years, he remained a cherished figure in the community. He celebrated his 90th birthday in 2023 with friends and admirers at The Fox Hole in Osterville.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
Coach Pete Melchiono will be remembered as a man who lived with humility, gave generously of himself, and inspired everyone around him.
His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the teams he coached, and the family he loved so deeply.
Rest in peace, Coach. You were truly one of a kind.
