On March 13, 2025, the basketball world lost a legend. Jerry Grote, a Loyola University Hall of Fame basketball guard, passed away at 85.

He left behind his beloved wife, Anna, with whom he had lived in Arizona for the past several years.

From a standout high school athlete to a transformative college star and professional player, Grote’s incredible journey remains a story of talent, determination, and legacy.

Jerry Grote was born on December 28, 1940, in Montebello, a lively area of Los Angeles. Growing up, he showed a natural gift for sports.

His athletic talents began to shine at Cantwell High School (now Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High School).

He succeeded in basketball and baseball but truly stood out on the basketball court.

By the time he graduated, Grote had caught the attention of college scouts.

He decided to focus solely on basketball, which would shape his future.

In 1959, Grote joined the Loyola University basketball team. The program was struggling at the time.

The team’s record in the 1957-1958 season was dismal: 6- 18. The following year, 1958-1959, wasn’t much better, with an 8-15 finish.

But everything changed when Grote arrived. In his first season, 1959-1960, the team soared to a 19-8 record. Grote led the squad in points per game, proving he was a game-changer.

The following year, 1960-1961, marked the pinnacle of his college career. Loyola finished with a 20-7 record, the school’s most successful season.

The team claimed the top spot in the West Coast Athletic Conference (WCAC), earning their first-ever conference championship.

Grote’s leadership and skill were undeniable. He earned a spot on the All-Conference team every year he played at Loyola.

He even won the Most Valuable Player award for the WCAC in his freshman year. His impact went beyond stats—he turned Loyola into a winning program.

After college, Grote’s talents took him to the professional stage.

In 1962, the St. Louis Hawks selected him in the fourth round of the NBA Draft.

However, Grote chose a different path. He joined the Long Beach Chiefs in the American Basketball League (ABL) for the 1962-1963 season.

He averaged 7.5 points per game across 24 contests, showing he could compete at a high level.

A couple of years later, Grote got another shot at the NBA. In the 1964-1965 season, he played for his hometown Los Angeles Lakers.

Though his time with the Lakers was brief, appearing in 11 games and scoring 14 total points, it added another chapter to his basketball story.

After playing, Grote moved into a successful career off the court.

He became Canada Life’s Western Vice President of Agencies, managing Regional Directors across the western United States.

In the early 1990s, he and his “Western Warriors” team drove significant growth for the company.

His leadership skills, honed on the basketball court, clearly carried over into his professional life.

Jerry Grote Is Survived By His Wife, Anna Grote

While much is known about Jerry Grote’s athletic and professional achievements, less is documented about his personal life.

He was survived by his wife, Anna, but little information is available about her or whether the couple had children.

Jerry and Anna built a life together in Arizona in their later years.

They seemed to enjoy a quieter chapter after his busy career, away from the spotlight that once followed his every move on the court.

When news of Jerry Grote’s passing broke, Loyola University’s Men’s Basketball team paid tribute to their Hall of Famer.

They posted a photo of him with a heartfelt caption,

Grote’s legacy lives on in the records he set, the championships he won, and the lives he touched.

For Loyola University, he was more than just a talented guard; he was a trailblazer who lifted the team to new heights.

For Anna, he was a partner who stood by her side. And for basketball fans, Jerry Grote remains synonymous with excellence, from Montebello to the WCAC and beyond.

As we remember the Loyola University Hall of Fame basketball guard, we also think of his wife, Anna, who now carries forward his memory.

Jerry Grote’s story is one of accomplishment, resilience, and quiet strength, echoing through Loyola’s history for years.
