Marcus Smart: Early Life, Family & Education

On March 6, 1994, Smart was born in Flower Mound, Texas, to Billy Frank Smart and Camellia Smart. He has three older brothers, Todd Westbrook, Jeff Westbrook, and Michael Smart.

His brothers Todd and Jeff were his half brothers from his mother’s previous relationship. Michael and Marcus share the same father. Smart was very close to his family from childhood and formed a good bond with his older brothers.

Smart grew up in the south of Dallas. He almost got into the gangster before the drastic change in his teenage years. At 12, Smart was nearly killed by a gang member. He lost five-year-old and sixteen years old relatives to gun violence. 

Tragic Death of Brother and Mother

Smart was close to his oldest brother Todd, but in 2004, the demise of Todd broke him. Todd was battling cancer for 18 years, and finally, at the age of 33, he lost his life to the disease.

Todd’s death was a drastic moment for the family, and they had to endure a lot during that time. Todd was the backbone of the family and a father figure to Smart. 

Smart always dedicates his match to his older brother and believes he is watching over him. He got his first tattoo to honor Todd. Smart wore the number 3 jersey throughout high school. He had also planned to wear the number 3 in his professional career. He later chose the number 33, which signified the age of Todd’s death.

Marcus was close to his mother and believes that he has been able to come so far because of her incredible support. Smart believes that all the success and discipline have come from his upbringing and family values.

He lost his mother due to cancer in 2018. Her death was a devastating moment in his life and shocked him. Smart has been posting about his mother on social media to honor and remember her. 

Education

Smart was interested in sports from a very young age. He used to play football at a young age and finally decided to continue basketball professionally in his high school years. 

Smart went to Edward S. Marcus High School. After graduating from high school, the player went to Oklahoma State for his college studies. He played college basketball for Oklahoma State.

In 2012, Smart ranked as the No. 1 shooting guard and the No. 10 player in the nation. 

Smart also participated in the NCAA Tournament in his college days. He had an excellent year in the field professionally.

An Incident with a Fan

On February 8, 2014, Smart had an incident with a fan on the court. He was close to the stand during the match, where the fans made some comments about him. In retaliation, Smart pushed the person in the frames and, as a result, received foul for his actions.

Smart accused the person of making racial comments, whereas the person declined. The person denied the claim made by Smart, and the audio from the incident proved the claim to the person.

He was suspended from the following three games due to his violent action, and the fan did not attend any Teas Tech games of the season.

NBA Career

On April 7, 2014, Smart left his college and declared himself for NBA. On June 26, 2014, he was drafted into NBA by Boston Celtics.

In a match against the San Antonio Spurs, Smart hit Matt Bonner and was suspended for his action on March 21. After almost two months, on May 18, he was back in action and was selected for the All-Rookie Second Team NBA.

On July 19, Smart extended his contract with the Celtics for four years worth of $52 million. He had many excellent matches with the Celtics during the year and was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team.

Smart used rude language and threatened the official on April 28, 2021. For his aggressive behavior, he was suspended for one game. 

On August 16, 2021, Smart extended his contract with the Celtics for four years worth $77 million.  

Smart missed the flight to Florida and was suspended for the preseason game on October 14, 2021. 

Marcus Smart: Injuries

In sports, injuries and accidents are considered normal as players often suffer from injuries and incidents while playing on the field. Smart also has a history of injuries.

Smart suffered from an ankle injury on November 7, 2014, and had to undergo medical attention. He was out of the court for ten games because of the damage.

On July 16, 2015, Smart suffered a massive injury where he dislocated two fingers of his right hand. He had to miss out on games for four months. 

Smart suffered a left leg injury the same year and had to miss 18 games following the injury. 

In January 2018, Smart had an incident in the team hotel where he cut his hand on the glass. He was off the court for a month. Again in March 2018, he tore a ligament in his right thumb and came out of the season. 

In the 2018-19 season, Smart had a left oblique tear and was out of the season. He was back in action in the second round of playoffs. 

Smart tested positive for COVID-19 on March 20, 2020. After his confirmation, he spoke about the disease publicly, addressing the symptoms and the precautions needed to follow. Marcus tested negative for the virus on March 29, 2020. 

On May 1, 2022, Smart suffered a quad injury in Game 1. He missed Game 2 but is expected to return for Game 3.

Smart is currently single. He is not engaged or married at the moment.

In 2018, Smart was with Maisa Hallum, an American businesswoman. Maisa is the founder and creative director of Sousa Swim. The couple dated for a while, but they are no longer together now.
