Maria was born on February 18, 1987, in a place called Tokoroa, New Zealand. She was given the name Solonaima Maria Tuta’ia at the time of birth.

She was named by her parents Fuisami and Niukini Tuta’ia after her grandmothers Solonaima and Malia.

In 2008, she was signed with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, where she partnered with Irene Van Dyk in the shooting circle.

She played as a Magic for two years before transferring to Auckland to play with the Northern Mystics in 2010.

She had started playing in the U21 team of New Zealand in the year 2003. Later in the year 2005, she helped her team bring home the World Youth Cup from Miami, which was a massive success for the young squad.

Her excellent game sense and skills helped her secure a spot on the Silver Ferns team. Then she made her on-court debut when the Ferns toured Jamaica.

Maria was in the squad of the Silver Ferns during their win in 2006, Commonwealth Games, 2009, and 2010 World Netball Championships.
