On the morning of May 13th, around 7 a.m., 23-year-old Mason Powell and his longtime girlfriend, Alexis Hagood, were in a serious car accident while driving home to Wellington, Florida, after visiting Kentucky.

Tragically, Mason passed away at the scene. Alexis survived but is in critical condition and facing a long road to recovery.

Mason Powell graduated from Wellington High School in Wellington, Florida, as a member of the Class of 2021.

He was a dedicated athlete who played offensive and defensive line for the Wolverines football team, wearing jersey #56.

Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 250 pounds, Mason also competed in wrestling, where he was a member of the 285-pound weight class.

Family And Friends Mourn The Loss Of Mason Powell

Mason’s older brother, Gage Brekke, shared the heartbreaking news, describing the deep pain their small family is experiencing.

Mason was not only his brother, but also the only biological child of Chris Powell, a well-known community coach in Wellington who has spent more than 20 years volunteering his time to support local youth through sports.

The family is asking for donations to help bring Mason home from Georgia, where the crash occurred, and to assist with Alexis’s medical expenses.

Any support, whether financial or through sharing their story, would mean much to them during this incredibly difficult time.

Lost my little brother this morning and we are devastated to say the least. The kid was only 23 years old and had an entire life ahead of him. Please help my family by sharing this post at least, anything helps. I love you Mason and I will see you again

Further, Stacey Henderson shared that Mason Powell and her son, Myles Henderson, had known each other since childhood.

They started playing in the WCFL football league back in 2010, often as opponents. Over the years, their friendship grew stronger as they continued to meet and play football with mutual friends during holidays and summer breaks.

They again played on rival teams in high school, Myles for Palm Beach Central and Mason for Wellington High School.

One of the lasting memories Stacey recalled was having dinner with both families, Chris and Janie Powell, Alexis, and her own, during the boys’ senior year, a tradition they shared several times as the boys grew up.

She also asked that any donations, no matter the size, be made to help support Mason’s family and Alexis after the accident.

Heartbroken 💔
Mason Powell & Myles Henderson played WCFL (usually playing against one another) starting back in 2010, they became friends, they’d meet up to play football over the holidays & in the summers with other friends…year after year as they grew up. They then played against one another when Myles played at PBC & Mason played for Wellington HS. And it was the boys senior year of high school that we last grabbed dinner after football with Chris N Janie Powell & Alexis at Bonefish Mac’s…something we’d done a few times over the years as the boys grew up.
So this news is just heartbreaking! There are no words…Michael, Myles, Sydney & I send all of our love to Chris & Janie…as I can not even fathom the pain they are going through.
ANY DONATION AMOUNT will be appreciated…and local friends…please share this Go Fund Me…as Wellington is a small community and even if you don’t know Chris and Janie or Mason and Alexis… You probably know someone that does know them. Hoping the community comes together to support this family in this awful time!

Stacey Henderson

During this painful time, our hearts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • Mason once took a photo with Gable Steveson from the University of Minnesota, who was ranked #2 in the nation in the 285-pound wrestling division at the time.
  • On November 3, 2018, Mason posted a highlight reel of his performance against Atlantic High School, which drew dozens of views.
