Jasper Philipsen emerged as the stage three winner in the 2023 Tour de France; however, his victory was not without its challenges.
As he crossed the finish line first, controversy surrounded his win due to his actions during the race.
The race commissaries analyzed how he blocked his fellow Belgian cyclist, Wout van Aert, on the final turn.
The finishing straight had a slight curve, and it appeared that Jasper cut van Aert off, leaving him with limited space between Philipsen’s elbow and a metal barrier lining the inside of the turn.
Van Aert said it was “hard to say about the fairness of Philipsen’s sprint.”
While Jumbo-Visma’s directeur sportif, Arthur Van Dongen, shared with Cyclingnews and Cycling Weekly that the issue lay more with the curved nature of the road leading to the finish line.
