Ingram was born on April 26, 1989. Melvin Ingram III is his full name, and he was born in the little town of Hamlet, North Carolina, his hometown.

The Chiefs’ linebacker and defensive end was born to George Melvin Ingram and Nancy Ingram in NC. He has a sister, Monique Ingram. 

Melvin Ingram attended Richmond High School in Rockingham, North Carolina. As a linebacker, he scored 87 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his senior year.

Ingram attended the University of South Carolina in the South Carolina Gamecocks football team from 2007 to 2011 under coach Steve Spurrier.

Melvin Ingram: Career

College Career

Ingram attended the University of South Carolina in the South Carolina Gamecocks football team from 2007 to 2011 under coach Steve Spurrier. He played as a linebacker in the team and then switched as a defensive end.

In his junior year, he led the team to victory with nine sacks in 2010. In 2011, Ingram recorded 10 sacks, 15 tackles, and two interceptions.

Ingram had two touchdowns in the match against Georgia in a 45–42 win. He ran 68 yards for a touchdown. In his senior year, he played an excellent game for the Gamecocks.

The team ranked fourth in the national poll. Ingram was selected in the All-Southeastern Conference and was named All-American. 

San Diego Chargers

In the first round, Ingram was the 18th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers.

In his rookie season, he had a record of 18 pressures from the quarterback, and it was the second most pressure on the team. Ingram also made 12 tackles which was the top on the team. He started on two games in a total of 16 games.

On May 14, 2013, Ingram suffered from a ligament injury in the practice matches of the Chargers. Unfortunately, his injury was pretty serious. As a result, Ingram was kept on the injury reserve list on August 26, 2013.

On December 7, 2013, Ingram was out of the reserve list before Week 14. In Week 16, Ingram had a forced fumble with the quarterback of the Raiders.

In the match against the Cincinnati Bengals, Ingram had one interception by picking off the opponent’s team quarterback.  

On February 27, 2017, the Chargers kept Ingram on the franchise tag. On June 11, 2017, the 6’2″ tall footballer signed a four-year contract of $66 million with the Chargers with $42 million guaranteed.

Ingram was the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September 2017. In week 3, He recorded 5.5 sacks, including a three-sack game in a match against the Chiefs.

In the whole season, he had 56 tackles and 10.5 sacks. Ingram was selected in Pro Bowl after the 2017 season and ranked 76th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018 by his companions.

2018 NFL Season

At the start of the 2018 NFL season, Ingram predicted the victory of the Chargers in Super Bowl LIII, and he said the team was ready to bring a Super Bowl to the city. 

Unfortunately, Ingram and the Chargers had to face failure in the Super Bowl. The team lost to the New England Patriots in a 41-38 loss in the playoffs. The ultimate champion of the Super Bowl was New England Patriots.

On June 17, 2019, Ingram again predicted the win of the Chargers in Super Bowl LIV and stated, “We’re the team to beat in the NFL, not just the AFC West, it’s the NFL. When we’re going against our offense, we feel like we need to beat them because they are the best. They need to beat us because we’re the best. That’s how we are going to get better.”

But again, his prediction was wrong as the Chargers failed to go to the Super Bowl and missed the playoffs with a poor record. 

On September 25, 2020, Ingram had a knee injury and was kept on the injured reserve list. He was freed from the reserve list on October 24, 2020.

Again on November 22, 2020, he suffered a knee injury and was back on the injury reserve list.

He played 113 regular games and made 360 combined tackles, 49 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. 

Pittsburgh Steelers

On July 20, 2021, the footballer signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers for $4 million with a signing bonus of $2,925,000 and $2,925,000 guaranteed. His average annual salary was $4,000,000.

Kansas City Chiefs

Ingram was transferred to the Kansas City Chiefs on November 2, 2021, in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Next year, on September 14, 2014, Ingram had a hip injury. On September 29, 2019, he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 4 in the match against the Miami Dolphins. Fortunately, his team won the game, but because of the injury, he missed 3 games.  

Later on September 25, 2020, Ingram suffered a knee sprain before the game against the Panthers. As a result, he was kept on the injury reserve list and out for 3 games.
