Denny Hamlin’s parents, Dennis Hamlin and Mary Lou Clark, have been a crucial part of his journey to becoming one of NASCAR’s top drivers.
Dennis Hamlin, Denny’s father, came from a working-class background in the U.S.
Before he met Mary Lou, he already had two daughters, Kim and Lisa, from a previous relationship.
He worked for 28 years as a service manager for Great Dane Trailers.
In 1996, he started his own business, Chesterfield Trailer and Hitch, in Virginia, where he repaired and sold trailers. That business became the family’s primary source of income.
Dennis saw Denny’s interest in racing early on. By age 3, Denny could name NASCAR drivers, and by 7, he was racing go-karts.
Knowing that racing is expensive, Dennis did whatever he could to help.
He took out mortgages on their house more than once and sold some of his favorite antique cars, including a 1932 Ford, a 1957 Chevy, and a 1969 Camaro, to pay for race parts, tires, and fuel.
Although he eventually stopped attending races in person around 2001 due to the stress and fear of accidents or breakdowns, he never stopped supporting Denny behind the scenes.
At his trailer shop, Dennis also taught Denny about car mechanics, skills that later helped him in racing.

Dennis married Mary Lou in 1973 when he was 21 and she was just 15.
They stayed together through decades of ups and downs and raised a big family, including their biological son Denny, Dennis’s two daughters, and two adopted sons, DJ and David.
Mary Lou Clark, Denny’s mother, grew up in Tampa, Florida, and was the youngest of six kids. She met Dennis at 15 and later graduated from Robinson High School in 1974.
She began working at a young age, selling hot dogs at 14, and later spent 33 years working as a file clerk at AAA.
She was known as the emotional rock of the family and played a key role in supporting Denny’s racing career. Like Dennis, Mary Lou also made sacrifices.
Mary Lou gave up her beloved 1967 Camaro Rally Sport convertible to help fund Denny’s racing and traveled with him to go-kart races across the country.
She filmed his races so he could study and improve, and also to stay calm during the stress of watching him race.
Mary Lou believed deeply in Denny’s talent. She once said that there were probably thousands of other kids like Denny who never got the chance, which is why she and Dennis did everything possible to give him that opportunity.
She also stayed involved by running Denny’s fan club and working at the souvenir trailer on race days.
In a media interview, Denny talked about how important her support has been and how much he values her presence in his life.
The sacrifices made by Dennis and Mary Lou were often risky and difficult.
At times, they struggled financially, but they kept going for Denny. Their efforts paid off in 2003 when Denny got a break.
A driver named Jim Dean overheard Denny saying he might have to stop racing because they couldn’t afford it.
Dean offered to sponsor him, which helped lead to Denny’s big chance with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2004.
Since then, Denny Hamlin has become one of NASCAR’s most successful drivers, with 57 Cup Series wins and three Daytona 500 victories in 2016, 2019, and 2020.
He often thanks his parents for their belief and hard work. He’s repaid them not just with words, but also by providing them with financial security and a peaceful retirement.
Now retired, Dennis and Mary Lou live in North Carolina near Denny.
They enjoy spending time with their grandchildren and take pride in the man and racer Denny has become.
As of 2025, Denny is also expecting his third child with his fiancée Jordan Fish, and his parents are happy to be part of their growing family.
