Laceka Golston rarely shares personal matters publicly, but when her 10th-grade son came home discouraged, she felt compelled to speak up.

Recently, she met with the coaching staff at Mineral Springs School District to discuss why her son, a dedicated athlete, was benched despite attending every summer practice.

According to the coaching staff, her son was considered underweight and was not performing adequately in his assigned position.

While Golston acknowledged the coach’s concerns, she expressed surprise at the timing and reasoning.

Her son had attended all summer practices, participated actively since his peewee days, and had never been informed of specific expectations regarding his position.

Golston described the coach’s approach as dismissive, noting that it seemed more likely to undermine her son’s confidence than support his growth as an athlete.

Despite this setback, Golston remains steadfast in her support.

While the coaching staff has relegated her son to kickoff returns, she believes he will continue to develop his skills, gain experience, and be ready for future opportunities.

She emphasized that her son’s resilience, determination, and work ethic will allow him to succeed both on the field and in life, regardless of temporary obstacles.

The situation has sparked significant discussion within the community.

Friends, family members, and other parents have expressed support for Golston and her son on social media.

Many commented on the importance of standing up for young athletes and advocating for their well-being.

Some highlighted that setbacks do not define a child’s potential, while others emphasized the role of guidance, encouragement, and faith in helping young athletes overcome challenges.

One supporter wrote, “No weapon formed against him shall prosper,” while another noted, “Sometimes a detour in life doesn’t mean you won’t reach your goal; it just means you’ll arrive through a different path.

The conversation also brought attention to broader concerns about coaching practices at Mineral Springs School District.

Several community members raised questions about fairness and favoritism, noting that other players who have violated team rules or underperformed remained on the roster.

Some parents suggested that weight and physical development concerns should be addressed early, during summer training or preseason preparations, rather than at the expense of a young athlete’s confidence during the season.

Despite the controversy, Golston remains optimistic. She believes that with continued practice, guidance, and parental support, her son will grow stronger, prove his abilities on the field, and achieve his goals.
