Kolten Hofmeyer, an Iowa native and MOC-Floyd Valley High School student-athlete, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025, at an untimely age of 16.
The tragedy struck in a rural area near Granville, Iowa, early Monday morning when a house fire claimed the lives of three teenagers, including Kolten Hofmeyer, leaving a fourth in critical condition.
According to Sioux County officials, the fire began around 5 a.m. at a residence located a few miles northwest of Granville.
Firefighters arriving at the scene reported heavy smoke and immediately called for mutual aid from nearby departments, including the Hospers Fire Department.
Furthermore, Granville Fire Department personnel found four individuals inside the home in critical condition. All were transported by ambulance to Orange City Area Health, with three later being transferred to specialized burn units for further treatment.
Tragically, 16-year-old Kolten Hofmeyer of Alton, 16-year-old Bryleigh Koob, and 17-year-old Ashton Koob, both of Granville, succumbed to their injuries.
Likewise, the fourth victim, a 16-year-old male from Alton, remains hospitalized in critical condition at a burn unit in Minnesota.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Granville Fire Chief in coordination with the Iowa State Fire Marshal.
The untimely death of Kolten Hofmeyer, Bryleigh Koob, and Ashtoon Koob has left a profound void in the lives of their family, friends, and loved ones.
Many of their loved ones are paying tribute to the deceased and extending their heartfelt condolences to their family during this difficult time.
Kolten Hofmeyer touched the lives of many with his amazing athletic skills. He played junior varsity football for the boys at MOC-Floyd Valley High School. He also excelled in basketball.

The MOC-Floyd Valley High School football star, Kolten Hofmeyer, was born on September 17, 2008, to parents Eric and Heather Hofmeyer, both natives of Iowa.
Furthermore, the untimely death of Kolten Hofmeyer has left his parents heartbroken. Both Eric and Heather shared a beautiful picture of their son on social media, paying tribute to him.
Although very little information is available about his father, Eric, as he prefers to maintain a low profile, Kolten’s mother, Heather, has been an elementary educator for over 15 years.
Heather has been serving as the 3rd-grade teacher at MOC-Floyd Valley High School since 2016. Prior to that, she served as a teacher for 5th and 6th grades at MMC Community Schools in Marcus, Iowa, for nearly four years.
Furthermore, Heather earned her General Studies degree from Kirkwood Community College and her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Teacher from the University of Dubuque in 2008.
In addition to his parents, Kolten Hofmeyer is survived by his three siblings: his sister, Makenna, and his two brothers, Cooper and Landyn, as well as the entire family.
His sister paid a heartfelt tribute to Kolten on her social media. Makenna shared a beautiful picture of them and wrote:
“I still can’t wrap my head around this. There are no words to describe how much I miss you. Fly high Kolten John you will be missed by many.❤️❤️.”
