Joel Boersma, a dedicated 6th-grade teacher and coach at MOC-Floyd Valley Community School in Orange City, Iowa, tragically lost his life in a car accident on November 8, 2025.

At 47 years old, Joel left a legacy of laughter, kindness, and inspiration that impacted many people.

His passing has brought deep sadness to the school, his family, and the wider Sioux City community where he lived.

Joel was an Iowa native who called Sioux City home for many years.

He shared that life with his wife of 23 years, Angela Roerdink Boersma, and their three children, two daughters and a son.

Friends remember him as a devoted husband and father who poured his energy into making every moment count.

Beyond his family, Joel was a pillar at MOC-Floyd Valley, where he taught middle school students and coached sports teams.

He had a special gift for turning classrooms into places of joy and fields into lessons in resilience.

Students didn’t just learn math or basketball from him; they learned to believe in themselves.

The news hit hard, especially coming so soon after other losses in the community.

MOC-Floyd Valley has faced tough times this year, and Joel’s death feels like another heavy blow.

People who knew him are sharing stories that reveal the kind of person he was, despite their sorrow.

His brother, Kyle Boersma, captured it beautifully in a heartfelt Facebook post.

He described Joel not just as a family member, but as a true friend, teacher, coach, dad, and husband who gave everything to others.

Kyle shared how Joel made school exciting for his students and taught athletes life lessons that went far beyond the game.

Many Parents, Colleagues, and Former Students Praised Joel for Making People Feel Valued and Capable

Tri-State Scanner, a local news source, expressed solidarity with the school. They wrote-:

MOC-Floyd Valley has certainly not had it easy this year. Our hearts go out to the entire school community during this difficult time. We send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the students, staff, and families following the unexpected passing of one of their beloved 6th-grade teachers.

Julie Vermeer Elliott, a local preacher, connected Joel’s death to a recent sermon she gave on grief and All Saints’ Day.

Just a week earlier, she had spoken about loss in their school and college communities, including five young lives taken too soon.

Now, with Joel gone, she offered her words as comfort.

“Tragically, our community has now lost a beloved middle school teacher as well, In case it would be a comfort to anyone who’s grieving, I’ve linked the sermon below. My part starts at 10:45. Please join me in praying for all who knew and loved Joel Boersma, especially his dear family. Our kids were among the countless students who were blessed to have him as a teacher.”

Parents like Monica Aalbers spoke directly to Joel’s magic in the classroom. Her daughter, Camryn, had him as her homeroom and math teacher this year. Monica recalled:

“We just had conferences with him last week, He was so encouraging and made the transition to middle school go so well for her. Math doesn’t come easy to Camryn, but he found a way to engage her and help her succeed! As Camryn would say… ‘Mom… I was so locked in math today. I didn’t even daydream once!’ Thank you, Mr. Boersma, for giving her confidence and seeing her effort in a challenging subject for her.”

Monica also highlighted Joel’s personal side. He and Angela joined her family’s church small group, where his big heart and deep thinking shone through.

She said-:

“He had such a genuine desire to be his best version of himself for his family and students, Their responses to the news showed how much they cared for him and respected him, Genuine tears, sobs, and hugs. We honestly didn’t know if they would be able to play because they were so shook. They decided to play because that is what he would want them to do! They wanted to play for him. Please pray for Angela Roerdink Boersma and the MOCFV school system.”

The grief even reached a 6th-grade girls’ basketball tournament the day after his passing.

Even former students felt the weight of the loss. Aubrey Wink, who once sat in Joel’s classroom, shared a simple but powerful memory.

She wrote-:

“One of the best teachers I’ve ever had, I’m so glad I got to observe his class Thursday, and it brought me back to when he was my teacher in sixth grade. He was so welcoming when I started here and moved schools. Prayers to the family.”

Joel’s sudden departure leaves a void, but his spirit seems to linger in every story told.

He was the kind of person who turned ordinary days into adventures, whether cracking jokes during lessons, cheering from the sidelines, or simply listening with full attention.

In a world that often feels too fast, Joel reminded everyone to slow down, laugh, and lift others.

As the MOC-Floyd Valley community gathers to remember him, they honor not just a teacher and coach, but a man who lived with purpose.

Prayers and support continue to flow for Angela, the children, and all who called him a friend.

Joel Boersma’s death is tragic, but his life will be remembered and cherished for years.

Rest easy, Joely, may your heaven be filled with endless hunts, perfect casts, and the joy you always shared.
