Montana Tech freshman and football standout Kellen Klimpel was involved in a serious car accident over the weekend, in a heartbreaking turn of events.

The news has left the close-knit Orediggers community reeling, but it’s also sparked an incredible wave of support for the 19-year-old wide receiver.

As Kellen battles through his recovery in the ICU at a Salt Lake City hospital, his family, teammates, and friends are holding strong, united in hope and prayer.

Kellen hails from Frenchtown, Montana, a Small Town Where he First Made his Mark on the Field.

At Frenchtown High School, from 2019 to 2022, he excelled as the quarterback, wearing jersey number 8, on the varsity team.

But football was just one piece of his vibrant life. Kellen also excelled in basketball and track, showing his athletic drive in every sport he participated in.

Off the field, he was a natural leader, serving on the student council and earning a spot in the National Honor Society.

Those who knew him describe a young man full of energy, kindness, and that rare spark that lights up a room.

Born to proud parents Joe and Mandi Klimpel, Kellen grew up alongside a brother and sister in a family that nurtured his dreams.

Now studying engineering at Montana Technological University in Butte, he’s chasing his passion for both the classroom and the gridiron.

As a wide receiver number 87 for the Orediggers, Kellen quickly became a beloved teammate, known for his toughness and team spirit.

It’s that same fighter’s heart his loved ones are counting on now.

The accident happened just days ago, landing Kellen in critical care far from home.

Transferred to one of Salt Lake’s top hospitals, he’s under the watchful eyes of world-class doctors, with his family by his side every step of the way.

Details of the crash remain private, but the impact has been profound, shattering routines and reminding everyone of the fragility of life.

Yet amid the pain, Kellen’s strength shines through. His mom, Mandi, shared that “his tribe is huge,” and they’re all feeling the love pouring in from across the state.

To ease the burden of mounting medical bills, travel, and lodging costs during this long road ahead, Montana Tech head football coach Kyle Samson stepped up fast.

He launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Help Kellen Klimpel and Family with Medical Costs,” aiming for $25,000.

In a raw and heartfelt message, Coach Samson wrote:

“One of our family members on our football team here at Montana Tech, Kellen Klimpel, was in a serious accident this past weekend. We know Kellen is very strong and is a fighter, and he is going to get through this. We are trying to raise money for him and his family for immediate and future medical expenses, as well as travel and lodging costs while they have to stay in Salt Lake for the duration of his care. Thank you in advance for any donations that can be made for Kellen and his family. We truly appreciate it! We love you very much, Kellen, and we are with you 100% and are praying for you and your family. All of the donations will be placed in Kellen’s mom’s account, Mandi Klimpel, so the donations can go directly to the family. Love, Coach Samson, our football staff, our players, and our whole Montana Tech football family.”

The response has been nothing short of inspiring. As of today, the fundraiser has blown past its goal, raising over $58,000 from hundreds of donors.
