Cyrus Johnson was a senior at Mount Vernon High School, remembered as both a varsity basketball player and a gifted performer in the school’s speech and theater program.
After returning to basketball for his senior year, he earned a spot on the varsity team.
Wearing jersey number 34, he scored his first basket on Senior Night in February 2025.
Beyond the court, Cyrus was a four-time All-State nominee in the MVHS Speech Program, where he co-led acclaimed productions, Antigone.
His career at Mount Vernon was defined not only by athletic and artistic achievements but also by his involvement in the marching band.
He was a drummer in the Mount Vernon marching band. His involvement in music added another dimension to his high school career.
Cyrus’ passing at this young age left a void in the hearts of his family, teammates, and the entire Mount Vernon community.
One of his closest friends shared a heartfelt tribute to Cyrus, saying:
This weekend, Mount Vernon was struck by a tragedy. Cyrus Johnson was a bright light in a dark night. His laugh filled every room he inhabited with energy and joy. He brought talent, passion, and presence to every moment he shared. The world is diminished, hollowed out, colder without him in it…
I pray for his family, his community, and all the young people affected. No one should know the pain of a life cut short this quickly.
Likewise, the Mount Vernon, Iowa bands‘ admin paid tribute to Cyrus, honoring his life and contribution, writing:
Our hearts go out to the family of Cyrus Johnson and all the members of the Mount Vernon Fine Arts department who are hurting today. Cy was a huge part of our band program as a member and instructor. Cy brought joy and beauty to everything he touched and he will be greatly missed.
Every moment. Every chance. For each other. Always.
Rest easy, Cy. We love you.
In the wake of his death, the community has come together to honor his memory and support his family through a GoFundMe campaign.
