Nick Senzel | Early Life, Family, and Education

Nick Senzel was born on June 29, 1995, in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of Jeff Senzel and Janice Senzel. Since a young age, his parents have been proud of him.

He was a favorite child of his parents, but he was forced to lead a shaky life in his youth.

In many of his interviews, Senzel always said that his parents never worried a second about his passion for becoming a baseball player.

Moreover, Nick went to Farragut High School for his higher education and then went to the University of Tennessee.

He played baseball with the volunteers during his undergraduate days. In many tournaments, he has played baseball and had many encounters with it.

His peers didn’t get used to it. So, not a comfortable early childhood. He wanted to watch Baseball Player experts and had a passion. 

After college, he was on the road to conquering the world. He received full support from his parents.

In Farragut, Tennessee, Senzel played high school baseball. He posted a .404 batting average as a junior, seven home runs, and 46 runs batted in (RBIs).

Nick hit .386 with five home runs and 42 RBIs as a senior. Further, he was released from his letter of intent to the University of Georgia after Georgia sacked coach David Perno.

He dedicated himself to the University of Tennessee on June 17, 2013. He appeared in his first collegiate season as a walk-on.

The Louisville Slugger and Perfect Game named Senzel, a freshman All-American. Senzel hit 25 doubles as a junior to top the Southeastern Conference.

In addition, Nick was nominated for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the nation’s best college player.

Likewise, he was also chosen to play in the summer of 2015 for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Brewster Whitecaps.

Moreover, Nick was also a member of baseball’s Tennessee Volunteers unit. He played the University of Tennessee’s designated hitter and second base.

With the second overall pick, the professional baseball team Cincinnati Reds chose Senzel. 

Further, Nick signed with the team on June 13, 2016, earning a $6.2 million signing bonus.

He finally made his professional debut with the Rookie-level Pioneer League Billings Mustangs.

Then, on June 30, he was promoted to the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League. He hit .329 for Dayton with seven home runs.

With the Class A-Advanced Florida State League’s Daytona Tortugas, Senzel finished the 2017 season. In June, he was promoted to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

With 14 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a .905 OPS in 119 games, he recorded a combined .321 batting average. 

The Reds elected to send Nick to the minor league camp, considering his success. However, in 2018, he underwent surgery on his right index finger to patch a torn ligament. 

Senzel informed new Reds boss David Bell following his return from an injury that he was planning to play center field.

With an opportunity to contend with Scott Schebler, the Reds allowed him to play in Spring Training.

Nick Senzel | Cincinnati Reds Career

The Reds called up Senzel to the majors on May 3, 2019. He made his major league debut at the Great American Ballpark that day, going 1-for-5, two strikeouts, and two walks.

Nick’s first hit was a slow-roller to third, where he beat out Tony Watson of the San Francisco Giants.

On May 4, Senzel hit his first major league home run off Dereck Rodríguez of the Giants. His second and his second and his second.

Senzel was placed on the disabled list with a broken labrum on September 12, 2019.

The Atlanta native batted .256 with 12 home runs, 20 doubles, and 42 RBIs in 104 of his first season in the Majors.

In the next season, on August 19, Senzel returned to the disabled list and missed 27 games for unknown reasons in August and September.

Senzel defeated .186/.247/.357 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 23 games during the pandemic-shortened season.

Nick Senzel | Injury

Back at the end of 2019, Senzel crashed awkwardly into the padding of Busch Stadium while catching.

Sadly, it was his last healthy moment of the season. Right then, he fell to the ground grimacing in pain. 

However, he didn’t give it up easily, as he got up with one knee to throw the ball back to the infield. But, the Reds lost while Senzel was injured with shoulder labrum tears.

As a short side story, labrum tears are one of the fearful injuries that an athlete can face. Even after 3-6 weeks of timeframe, Senzel’s shoulder showed no sign of improvement.

Later, they stated that the labrum tear in his right shoulder had gotten worse since an earlier baseline MRI.

Therefore, Nick had to fly to California to meet Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who suggested surgery.

After that, Dr. Tim Kremchek performed surgery on Nick Senzel’s right shoulder labrum with a diagnosis. As of now, Nick has to wait to recover and work on a full range of motion.

However, no one is certain about how long it takes or what it needs to be done; Nick is confident to return to the way he was fully.
