Normal, Illinois, community is mourning the untimely death of beloved native and wrestling standout and coach, Demetrius Turrentine.

Demetrius Turrentine passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, at the age of 23.

According to some reports, Demetrius Turrentine took his own life; however, details surrounding his untimely death have not been disclosed by his family members yet.

Born on February 13, 2002, Demetrius was a cherished member of Normal, Illinois sports community and touched the lives of many with his amazing athletic and coaching skills.

After a remarkable high school and collegiate wrestling career, Demetrius Turrentine continued his journey as a beloved coach and served as the wrestling coach of the Normal West Wildcat girls Wrestling team until his recent passing.

Normal West Wildcat Wrestling took to its official social media to pay tribute to late coach Demetrius Turrentine and wrote:

“After wrestling in college, he came back to our community and back to our team. He wanted to give back to something that had given so much to him. His last two seasons had been dedicated to the girls program where he was helping to grow a thriving team. There will be a huge hole left by his absence. His impact will be felt for years to come.Rest in Peace Coach DT.Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat 🐾”

Late Demetrius Turrentine Was Standout Former Wrestler at Concordia College and Normal Community West High School

Prior to touching the lives of numerous young athletes with his amazing coaching skills, the late Demetrius Turrentine won the hearts of many with his amazing athletic skills in high school and college.

The late Demetrius Turrentine built his wrestling journey through dedication, discipline, and leadership, progressing from high school competition in Illinois to collegiate wrestling in Minnesota.

He began his wrestling career at Normal Community West High School, from which he graduated in 2020.

Wrestling primarily at 157 pounds, Demetrius served as a team captain and earned Second Team All-Conference honors, while helping Normal West secure third-place finishes at both the regional and conference levels.

Alongside his high school career, he gained valuable experience competing with the Iguana Wrestling Club, where he wrestled in the 152–157 pound range and faced strong regional and national-level competition, including opponents from Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Demetrius continued his wrestling career at Concordia College in Minnesota, where he competed at the collegiate level while majoring in Exercise Science. Balancing academics and athletics, he represented the program with the same work ethic and commitment that defined his earlier years, ultimately completing his degree and graduating.

Standing 5’11” and competing in the 157 to 165-pound classes, Demetrius wrestled right-hand dominant and carried a championship mindset throughout his career, staying true to his belief in hard work, leadership, and constant improvement.

Furthermore, the untimely death of Demetrius Turrentine has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones.

Many of his loved ones are sharing his memories on social media and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

One wrote:

“💔😢 Demetrius Turrentine. So many memories watching you grow up. Such an intelligent and bright soul gone too soon. Rest easy Meech. 💔😢 Please pray for the Harris family. 🙏🙏”

Demetrius Amante Turrentine-Harris is survived by his beloved mother, Samantha, and the entire family.

His mother took to her social media to express her sorrow at losing her beloved son and wrote:

“My son was a bright light. He overcame so many obstacles when we left Illinois and he chose to stay. He went back to his old high school to coach his wrestling team bec he loved the sport and was dedicated to his kids the way his coach was dedicated to him. He was a great child and an amazing son. My life will never be the same.”

Demetrius’ family will soon provide details about his funeral and memorial services. His contagious smile and his contribution to the Normal community as an amazing athlete and coach will always be remembered.
