A volleyball coach and county clerk, Kent Matzinger, got catfished by a man named Jacob Day.

As per Kent’s official LinkedIn handle, he attended Clinton High School from 1998 to 2001. He received his bachelor’s degree from Adrian College in 2006.

Kent served as the deputy clerk and assistant clerk at the State of North Carolina from September 2007 to February 2015.

From July 2021 to August 2025, he served as the deputy court clerk at the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court.

He also served as the Charlotte youth volleyball coach for a long time.

Volleyball Coach And Court Clerk Kent Matzinger Caught In Multi-State Catfishing And Exploitation Case

The case of Kent Matzinger, a former Mecklenburg County deputy clerk and longtime youth volleyball coach, sent shockwaves through the Charlotte community.

He is now facing charges of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor after being named in a sprawling multi-state investigation that started in Texas.

The investigation started in September 2024 when Texas authorities arrested Jacob Day. Day was accused of creating fake online personas, typically posing as teenage girls, to solicit explicit content from actual minors.

Once he had obtained such material, investigators say Day would repurpose the images and impersonate minors in conversations with adult men, often requesting money, gift cards, or other favors in exchange for sexually explicit interactions.

During the investigation, Day provided the names of adults he had allegedly been in contact with, and one of those was Kent.

Authorities connected the name to Kent Matzinger, who, according to police officials, had sent Day substantial amounts of money through CashApp and gift cards.

Screenshots recovered from Day’s phone revealed messages spanning nearly four years, from March 2020 to January 2024.

Day’s account claimed to be 16 years old, and “kentpoolcollects,” an account investigators linked to Kent allegedly requested explicit photos and videos.

Two transactions, one in October 2021 and another in February 2022, were flagged. In the latter instance, authorities confirmed the individual in the imagery was 15 years old at the time.

On January 16, 2025, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the FBI executed a search warrant at Matzinger’s residence. Matzinger admitted to communicating with someone online under the name “Zianna.”

He acknowledged receiving sexual photos and videos showing the individual undressing and engaging in sexual acts.

Matzinger said that by 2023, he started noticing “red flags” and suspected he was being catfished. Following his arrest, Matzinger posted a $50,000 bond on August 19, 2025.

Court records show his next hearing is scheduled for September 4, 2025.

The Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court’s Office confirmed Kent resigned from his deputy clerk position on August 7.

His other longtime role, as a volleyball coach at Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club, also ended when he submitted his resignation through email on August 12.

The volleyball club, where Matzinger coached for 16 years, released a statement:

“Kent was a part-time volleyball coach for the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club for the past 16 years. He resigned last Tuesday by sending us an email with no explanation. We have never had any issues with Kent the entire time he has worked for the club, and we have never received any complaints about him personally or as a coach. The news about his recent arrest and charges are a shock to all of us at CJV.”
