Canadian basketball star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s parents come from a background deeply rooted in sports, including his mother being an Olympian and his father training him as his first coach.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a Canadian professional basketball player playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA.

Born in 1998 and debuted in the NBA in 2018, the guard quickly became one of the league’s elite players.

His family’s athletic lineage is noteworthy and has impacted how he entered and performed on the court.

Shai’s mother was an Olympic-level sprinter; his father played high school basketball. Given this fact, it wasn’t surprising for him to be inclined to sports.

Despite this fact, his journey began with challenges and setbacks. However, it didn’t deter him, and his parents continued to play him on different levels of teams.

Canada-born Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Father, Vaughan Alexander, Served as His First Basketball Coach Before Going Pro!

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has roots deeply embedded in athleticism, primarily influenced by his parents.

He was born in Toronto, Canada, on July 12, 1998, to former Olympic sprinter Charmaine Gilgeous and Vaughn Alexander.

The athletic touch in his life and his entry into sports are all due to his parent’s background. His mother, Charmaine, represented Antigua and Barbuda in the 400 meters at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Charmaine thrived in sports during high school, excelling in track and field.

She was an Ontario provincial champion, winning multiple titles in several events during the late 1980s.

Charmaine, attended the University of Alabama, where she became a five-time All-American athlete.

Charmaine is the mother of two children, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Shai inherited his father Vaughn Alexander’s passion for basketball and made it his primary sport.

Although Vaughn Alexander was Shai’s first basketball coach, he is better known as Shai’s father than for his coaching role.

Vaughn played basketball at Georges Vanier Secondary School in Toronto during the early 1990s. He won the city championship that year.

At a young age, his passion for the sport ignited Shai’s interest in basketball.

After Shai became a professional, Charmaine began working as a banker, and Vaughn worked as a contractor.

Not to forget, Shai is not the only athlete in the family. He has a younger brother, Thomasi Gilgeous-Alexander, who played three games in the first season of the University of Evansville Athletics.

Likewise, his cousin, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves. This speaks highly of his family’s strong ties to sports.

Shai boasts a mixed heritage; his father is Canadian, and his mother is from Antigua, which enriched his identity both on and off the court.
