The Omaha community is mourning the sudden loss of Brian Sweeney, a cherished Navy veteran and respected sports umpire, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the age of 52.
Known for his warm heart, laughter, and deep commitment to those around him, Brian’s death has left a void in the hearts of many.
The death of Brian Sweeney in Omaha has brought many messages of love and support from his friends, family, and the sports community he cared about deeply.
Brian Sweeney Lived a Life of Purpose and Dedication
As a proud veteran, he served honorably in the United States Navy, carrying a spirit of duty that shaped his character.
After his military service, he found his true calling on the sports fields of Omaha, where he became a beloved umpire.
With integrity and a genuine love for the game, Brian officiated countless matches, earning the respect of players, coaches, and fans.
Darby Peterson, a former player, shared a heartfelt memory on social media, writing,
“Oh wow, this one hits different. I remember him all throughout my years of select ball and high school. One of the best! Sure will be missed.”
His presence on the field made every game feel special, and his fairness left a lasting impression.
Beyond his role in sports, Brian was a devoted family man and friend. He was a father figure to four children, raising them with love and care.
Though he and his ex-wife, Keri Sweeney, eventually parted ways, they remained close friends, bound by mutual respect and shared memories.
In a moving Facebook post, Keri wrote,
“It’s with a very heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my ex-husband, Brian, who died peacefully in his sleep this week. Although our paths in life eventually went separate ways, we remained friends. Brian was highly respected in the Omaha sporting community, and there’s been an outpouring of support.”

Brian is survived by his son, Jacob Sweeney, his brother, Jeff Sweeney of Springfield, NE, his step-sister, Lynette Sweeney, his aunts Patricia (and her husband Jeff) Liss and Kathy, and his uncle Tom. He was predeceased by his parents, Timothy and Judith Sweeney, whose memories he cherished deeply.

One of Brian’s greatest joys was his loyal dog, Rocky, a 6-year-old Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier who was his constant companion.
Keri described Rocky as “loyal, gentle, and full of love,” a dog who thrived on Brian’s affection.
Sadly, Rocky is now grieving not only Brian’s loss but also the recent passing of his bonded companion, a pug owned by Brian’s daughter, Kathryn.
With Brian gone, Rocky needs a new forever home to share his boundless love. Keri shared,
“Rocky is truly a special dog, loving, house-trained, calm, and great with kids, cats, and other dogs. He’s a big softie who thrives on attention and affection. He would do best in a home with a yard to play in and, ideally, another pet, kids, or a person who’s home often.”

A close friend is currently caring for Rocky in Omaha, but Keri and her family, who live out of state, are unable to take him in due to their travel schedules and life changes.
They are determined to find Rocky a loving home, even offering to cover plane travel or transport costs to ensure he finds the right family.
If you or someone you know can open your heart to Rocky, please reach out to help this special dog find the stability he deserves.
The Omaha Sports Community has been Deeply Shaken by Brian’s Passing
Kathy Esterl Folk wrote,
“Godspeed, Brian! Thank you for your service to the youth of Nebraska!”
His influence reached far beyond the games he officiated, as he was a mentor and role model to many young athletes.
James D. Washington shared a touching story, noting,
“He was scheduled to be the home plate umpire at our State Championship game for Class B. His brother stepped in and called a hell of a game!”
This act by Brian’s brother, Jeff, was a powerful tribute to Brian’s legacy.
Brian had a unique ability to connect with people, whether through his service in the Navy, his work in the field, or his warm interactions with those around him.
His laughter and kindness were contagious, and his absence will be profoundly felt.
Friends, family, and community members are invited to gather for a Celebration of Life to honor Brian on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Braman Mortuary (Millard Chapel) in Omaha, NE.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM.
This gathering will provide an opportunity to share stories, laughter, and memories of a man who touched so many lives.
Brian Sweeney’s life was evidence of the power of kindness, dedication, and community.
Whether serving his country, officiating a game, or caring for his family and beloved dog, he approached everything with a generous spirit.
As Omaha mourns Brian Sweeney’s death, his memory lives on through the stories shared by those who knew him, the love he gave to his family, and the loyalty of his dog, Rocky, who now seeks a new home to carry forward Brian’s legacy of love.
