Oneonta, Alabama Based Nine-Year-Old Rocky Calvert, Who Has Fought Vanishing Gastroschisis, Cancer, Infections, and a Triple Organ Transplant, Throws First Pitch at High School Baseball Game Before Being Rushed Back to ICU with Pneumonia in Both Lungs

At nine years old, Rocky Calvert of Oneonta, Alabama has already faced more medical challenges than many adults could endure in a lifetime.

Born with vanishing gastroschisis, a rare and severe condition in which his intestines developed outside of his body, Rocky entered the world on September 22, 2016, with uncertain chances of survival.

While most babies spend their first year learning to crawl, walk, and explore, Rocky spent that year in the ICU, surrounded by machines that breathed for him, nourished him, and monitored every vital sign of his fragile body.

For nearly all of his life, hospital rooms have been Rocky’s home. He has faced seizures, dangerous blood loss, repeated infections, severe pancreatitis, cancer of the lymph nodes, and pneumonia, among other life-threatening conditions.

He has undergone a triple organ transplant, receiving a new liver, small bowel, and pancreas, as well as a spleen removal. Each surgery carried immense risks, and each recovery demanded courage far beyond his years.

Yet, through all of these trials, Rocky has remained a fighter — living up to the strength his name suggests.

“Hospitals are no fun! Rocky struggles with this admission more than he has others!” his mother, Michelle Calvert, shared.

“But man, he is such a trooper! Boy being hit from all sides! But he don’t have the name Rocky for no reason.”

Recently, Grayson Lee Calvert, aka Rocky, experienced a moment that brought his family and community a sense of hope.

Despite everything he has endured, he was well enough to throw out the first pitch at a school playoff baseball game.

For a boy who has spent so much of his life confined to hospital rooms, standing on a baseball field symbolized far more than sports. It represented freedom, normalcy, and the chance to feel like a child again.

Baseball has become a powerful symbol for Rocky — a dream of a life beyond IV poles and ventilators, and a future he hopes to embrace despite his ongoing health battles.

Tragically, that brief taste of normalcy was short-lived. Rocky was rushed back to the ICU at Children’s of Alabama after being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.

He was kept on a ventilator, fighting for each breath as his small body battled fluid buildup and infection.

Michelle shared, “He’s 50 percent sedated. He has too much fluid everywhere. We’re trying to get the fluid out of his lungs.”

Every breath and every hour matter, and each small improvement is celebrated by his loved ones.

Rocky’s journey has inspired a community of supporters who rally around him with prayers, messages of hope, and encouragement.

His story highlights not only the severity of his Rocky disease — the ongoing medical challenges he faces — but also the strength, determination, and courage that define him. Those who know Rocky emphasize that his health struggles do not define him; his spirit and his dreams do.

Despite all he has endured, Rocky continues to dream. One day, he hopes to become a professional baseball player, a dream many children share, but one that shines even brighter in the life of a boy who has fought for every breath, every step, and every moment of joy.

For Rocky, baseball represents life beyond hospital walls — open fields instead of sterile rooms, cheering crowds instead of beeping monitors, and the hope that the future holds more moments of happiness and freedom.

As Rocky remains in the hospital, the Oneonta community and supporters far beyond continue to send their love, prayers, and encouragement.

They remind him that he is not alone in this fight — that he is seen, loved, and believed in by countless hearts cheering him on.
