Doctors had discovered a golf ball-sized tumor in her leg, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer that affects fewer than 20,000 individuals in the United States each year.
Reflecting on this life-altering event, Dan, who was in Memphis at the time, revealed that it completely transformed his perspective on life.
He shared his new outlook before the 2022 college football season, saying, “Once I got to Memphis, my wife was diagnosed with cancer, and it really reshaped my entire ‘why’. Now, I want to be a guy that helps people. We are not here just to have championship football players; we are here to create championship fathers, championship husbands.”
Throughout Sauphia’s cancer journey, she underwent regular chemotherapy treatments.
Dan made his family’s well-being his top priority during this challenging period, even occasionally missing football meetings and practices to support his wife.
Their determination and resilience paid off, as in 2017, Sauphia was declared cancer-free, marking a triumphant milestone in their lives.

Dan Lanning and Sauphia Lanning have shared a loving and enduring marriage since they tied the knot on October 17, 2009.
Together, they are the proud parents of three sons named Caden, Kniles, and Titan. The family resides in Athens, a city that Lanning has described as an ideal place to raise a family.

Their eldest son, Caden, was born in 2010 and is currently 14 years old.
Knile, their second son, was born in 2012 and is now 12 years old.

Lanning’s tattoo spans from just below his armpit to just above his waist on his left side and is a tribute to his wife, Sauphia, whom he married in 2009.
Sauphia is the central figure of the tattoo, and their three sons, Caden, Kniles, and Titan, are honored with their names inked on her neck.
The tattoo also features a cross necklace, symbolizing their Christian faith. Notably, a yellow ribbon is prominently displayed on Sauphia’s neck, the only splash of color in the entire artwork, signifying bone cancer.
