In Green Bay, Wisconsin, a high school football rivalry game turned into a focal point of controversy and community outcry.
On October 17, 2025, Green Bay East High School faced off against crosstown rival Green Bay West in a historic matchup, but the story that unfolded went far beyond the final score of 7-3 in favor of West.
East’s head football coach, Kominiko “Niko” Sila, was notably absent from the sidelines after being placed on paid administrative leave by the school district.

With no clear explanation provided, fans, parents, players, and alumni erupted in support for the coach, chanting “Bring Back Niko” during halftime and flooding social media with messages of frustration and solidarity.
The game itself was charged with emotion from the start.
The Red Devils of East, entering with a 2-6 record, were still in the hunt for a spot in the WIAA Division 2 playoffs after a key win over Sheboygan North the previous week.
That victory marked their first against the Golden Raiders since 2014, a sign of progress under Sila’s leadership after years of lopsided defeats.
Against West, however, East struggled without their coach, managing only a field goal in a low-scoring defensive battle.
West’s coach, Witt, later shared that he received no details about Sila’s absence, only that he was unavailable.
Witt, who described his relationship with Sila as positive, said he planned to reach out personally after the game to check on him.
Sila’s sudden placement on leave came as a shock to many. He had been named head coach in June 2023, stepping in after Levi Nelson resigned following three seasons.
From the beginning, Sila brought a fresh energy to the program.
In his first year, he guided East to a thrilling 14-13 upset over Appleton West in Week 1, snapping a winless streak that stretched back more than two years and giving the team its first 1-0 start since 2013.
Beyond coaching football, Sila serves as the manager of student engagement, attendance, and advocacy at East High School, roles that highlight his commitment to supporting students both on and off the field.
A 2023 profile from the Green Bay Area Public School District showcased Sila as a dedicated mentor who emphasizes personal growth and community involvement.
School officials have remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind the decision.
East’s athletic director, Steph Mathu, directed inquiries to the district’s communications department.
Tim Flood, the administrator for district co-curricular programming, offered little insight, leaving the community in the dark.
Sila himself did not respond to messages seeking comment before the game.
This lack of transparency has fueled speculation and anger, especially amid reports of officiating blunders during the matchup.
Witnesses described repeated errors by the referees, including granting extra downs to West, unexplained time adjustments on the clock, misplaced ball spots, and even a disputed touchdown where an East player appeared to cross the goal line but wasn’t credited.
Parents and Fans Voiced Their Disappointment with Management on Social Media After the Game
One Facebook post captured the widespread sentiment:
Other community members echoed this support with personal stories about Sila’s impact. Baybeë Raí shared,
“This man literally brings nothing but POSITIVE and SUPPORTIVE energy anywhere & everywhere he goes!! He was the best mentor I ever had growing up, pushed me to be the best version of myself. He deserves better fs.”

Irene Pineda added,
“Niko is a truly kind-hearted individual who will do anything for others. He sparked my interest in powerlifting in 2021 and provided valuable coaching, always showing respect and support. He’s an exceptional mentor in both sports and life, and I have nothing but respect and love for him. He’s a driven and genuine person.”

Brandon Bender highlighted the game’s issues, writing,
“This was terrible to do to the boys yesterday and the refs literally did terrible for both teams. Multiple times they gave Green Bay West an extra 4th down. In the 2nd quarter there was 56 seconds left and all of a sudden there was 2:56 left. Many were recording last night as refs kept moving the ball the wrong way against both teams. Final easy touchdown they didn’t count and the player was laying in the end zone. Something needs to be done about this.”
Ashley Klitzka chimed in,
“They did those boys dirty on purpose for no reason! Coach Niko is an amazing coach! The coaches that didn’t show up at the end of the night last night for the boys in the locker room are the real issue. Not only did the administration do the Team dirty so did the refs of the game last night!”

As the story continues to grow, the Green Bay community is calling for answers from the school district.
Sila’s contributions to East High School extend beyond wins and losses; he’s built a program focused on resilience and character.
With the playoffs still within reach, the Red Devils now face uncertainty about their leadership.
For many, this isn’t just about football—it’s about standing up for a coach who has stood by them. As one supporter put it, the players and the community deserve better than silence.
