Willie Weiss was ejected during the Big Ten Tournament semifinal held in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 29, 2022, while pitching for the University of Michigan against Iowa.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Iowa’s coach Rick Heller alerted the umpiring crew to suspicious behavior.
Weiss was seen rubbing the edge of his glove in an unusual way between pitches.
Upon inspection, umpires found a foreign sticky substance (reported as Pine Tar) on his glove.
This violated NCAA Baseball Rule 9-2c, which prohibits pitchers from possessing or applying foreign substances to the ball or their hands.
He was immediately ejected and later handed a four-game suspension by the Big Ten.
This incident overshadowed Weiss’s otherwise promising season. He had recently shown signs of returning to form after earlier struggles with his ERA.
It didn’t end his career, but it certainly complicated his trajectory at a key moment.
Soon after the incident, Weiss transferred to Clemson University as a graduate student, joining the baseball team as a relief pitcher.
