Powerlifter Serena Abweh’s boyfriend, Garrett Gonzales, was one of the well-known faces in the powerlifting community. Garrett also owned a gym in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The 22-year-old powerlifter, Serena Abweh, first gained recognition on YouTube four years ago by talking about her transformation. She then took her talent to the international stage by doing her first international meet in 2019.

Since 2021, the talented youngster had been dating Garrett Lee Gonzales, who is a veteran in the powerlifting community. He even had a famous YouTube channel named Massthetics. 

On May 18, 2023, the powerlifter unexpectedly passed away, sending shockwaves in the fitness community. His girlfriend, Serena, shared a heartbreaking post as a tribute to him a week later on Instagram.

Serena Abweh’s boyfriend, Gareet Gonzales, drew his last breath on May 18, 2023. Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Garrett Gonzales was 13 years older than Serena.

Garrett graduated from the University of New Mexico with a science degree in Nuclear Engineering and later interned at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and The Palo Verde Generating Station.

Gonzales was a gym owner and established Legion Iron Gym in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The gym was established in 2018, and Garrett talked about it in detail in the podcast Only Kings. 

Before establishing the gym, Garrett was already a famous name in the fitness scene due to his YouTube channel, Massthetics. The channel was a collaborative effort between Garrett and his former friend Simon Otero.

The two had already amassed a following of upwards of 50k on the channel before they deleted it in 2018. The partnership ended after they established the gym and were involved in a lawsuit. 

During this entire ordeal, Garrett was also a medical student at the University of New Mexico. The powerlifter has also previously published a journal called Synthesis of Nitric Oxide Probes With Fluorescence Lifetime Sensitivity.

Garrett Gonzales Family

Garrett Gonzales was the firstborn of Mona Lisa and Jerry Gonzales. The couple also have a daughter, Loretta Gonzales.

Like her brother, Loretta is also a fitness freak and does powerlifting. Right after the Legion Arm Gym was established, Loretta shared a video of powerlifting alongside her brother on her Instagram

Last year, Loretta shared the news of completing 15 months of PA school didactic and that she was off to clinical rotations. In the photos shared by Loretta, Garrett was also seen alongside his parents, cheering for his sister on the special occasion. 

Loretta shared an emotional post on June 3, 2023, after her brother’s demise. She made the post on his birthday and ended the post by writing she would try to live her life as fearlessly as he did. 

Serena Abweh And Garrett Gonzales Relationship Timeline

Serena Abweh and Garrett Gonzales began dating in 2021. Garrett confirmed his romance with Serena after sharing a post on his Facebook handle.

On her Instagram handle, Serena could be seen training at Legion Iron Gym. In some of the videos shared by Serna, Garrett can also be seen making short cameos.

One of the recent videos posted by Serena with Garrett was on May 15, which showed Garrett helping her with squats. And only three days after that video, the tragedy hit. 

On May 24, Serena shared a gallery of images and an emotional tribute to Garrett on her Instagram handle. The video showed all the romantic and celebratory moments they shared as a couple.

She also added a lengthy caption that ended with a sweet but heartbreaking message that read, “Everything I do, I do it for you now. I won’t give up because I am here to share your legacy and your memory. Please give me the strength to keep going.”
