A racial slur targeting Black people was found written on a bathroom stall door at Lynnfield High School, prompting a formal investigation by both school administrators and the Lynnfield Police Department.
Superintendent Tom Geary released an official statement to the Lynnfield Public Schools community addressing the incident and outlining the district’s response.
According to Geary’s notification, school and district administrators were made aware of the incident and immediately began responding.
The matter has been formally documented and will be reported to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), consistent with the district’s obligations in addressing incidents of bias and discrimination.
The discovery came just one day after many members of the Lynnfield community gathered to share their personal experiences and concerns about how the school district creates safe and inclusive spaces for students.
Community members made it clear during that meeting that they expect not just words, but real action from school leadership.
In his statement, Geary addressed the weight of the language used. He noted that the N-word carries a long and painful history rooted in anti-Black racism, dehumanization, and exclusion, and that its presence in the school causes real harm regardless of the intent behind it.
Community Calls for Accountability as School Promises Consequences
The timing of the incident added to the frustration felt by many in the community.
One question that surfaced publicly following the post was whether security cameras were in place to help identify the person responsible, a concern raised by a community member in the comments of the town’s Facebook announcement.
Geary’s statement confirmed that appropriate consequences will be determined in accordance with district policies, student handbooks, and applicable laws.
While the district stated it cannot share confidential details involving individual students, officials are committed to continuing transparent communication with the broader community as the investigation moves forward.
In the coming days, Lynnfield High School plans to create structured opportunities for students to come together, reflect on the impact of the incident, and reaffirm the values the school community is expected to uphold.
Geary emphasized that these conversations are not meant to simply react to one event, but to continue the ongoing work of building a school culture rooted in belonging, understanding, and respect.
The superintendent also acknowledged that the incident may be especially painful for Black students, families, staff, and community members, and stated that the district is committed to providing support to those impacted.
Lynnfield Public Schools issued a firm condemnation of all forms of racism and discrimination, reaffirming its commitment to a school environment grounded in dignity, respect, and accountability.
As of now, both the school district and the Lynnfield Police Department continue their investigations. No further details regarding suspects or disciplinary actions have been made public.
