The Auburn community and beyond are in mourning as news of Chette Williams’ untimely passing away spreads across social media.

Tributes and condolences have poured in from former players, coaches, and fans who were touched by his spiritual guidance and unwavering support.

The tragic news broke over the weekend, with reports from FOX6 WBRC Anchor Jonathan Hardison confirming that Williams “died tragically this afternoon at Lake Martin.”

Reports citing multiple sources noted that Williams’ demise occurred on Sunday.

The cause and circumstances of his passing are still emerging, but his loss is already being deeply felt.

According to the report, an unnamed man (suspected to be Chette Williams) passed away Sunday night at Lake Martin in a tragic accident.

The man, accompanied by a neighbor, had traveled by boat to have dinner at the Kowaliga Restaurant, a well-known local establishment.

Upon discovering that the restaurant was closed for a private event, the two attempted to return to their boat.

As the man attempted to board, he fell into the water between the boat and the dock.

Despite his friend’s efforts to rescue him, he tragically drowned.

Authorities have not officially confirmed whether this incident is directly connected to Chette Williams’ demise.

However, the timing and location have led many to believe there may be a link.

Chette Williams’ Remarkable Career

Chette Williams’ legacy is deeply embedded in Auburn’s football program and its larger community.

As a former Auburn linebacker from 1982 to 1984, he was known for his grit and leadership on the field.

However, his post-football career had an even greater impact.

Williams dedicated over 20 years to serving as Auburn’s on-campus director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

His role extended beyond the football program as he also served as the State Director for Urban Ministries for FCA.

In this capacity, he became a spiritual advisor, mentor, and guiding force for countless student-athletes, coaches, and community members.

Former players have often credited Williams with providing crucial emotional and spiritual support during pivotal moments in their lives.

Trovon Reed, a member of Auburn’s 2010 national title team, described him as “the heartbeat of Auburn” in a heartfelt tribute on social media.

His influence reached far beyond the football field, as he was a trusted friend and advisor to Auburn’s coaching staff as well.

Chette Williams Lost His Son In 2019

Chette Williams’ personal journey was previously marked by profound grief when his family experienced the devastating loss of his son in 2019.

The then-Auburn coach Gus Malzahn spoke at the time, expressing his deep sympathy for Williams and his family.

“The first thing I wanted to say is we’re hurting for Brother Chette (Williams), our FCA chaplain. He lost his son over the weekend. Brother Chette has been around here a long time, I think over 20 years. He’s touched so many of our players’ hearts over the years. I know he’s a personal friend to all of our coaches and a personal friend for me. He goes on a mission trip with me and Kristi every summer with our players. We’re just hurt for him. Auburn family — we’re going to love him and help him through this tough time.”
