Tax Fraud Charges & Conviction

The St. Vincent-St. Mary assistant basketball coach, Romeo Travis, was charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States and one count of wire fraud on March 9, 2023.
As a matter of fact, he underreported income totals in an effort to lower his tax liability and reduce child support payments.
The first charge alleged that Travis consented to have his sports agent understate the income he received through contracts with overseas teams.

As a result, Travis’ agent altered his basketball contracts before those contracts were sent to his tax preparer.
Furthermore, the second charge alleged that Travis used the tax returns that underreported his income to reduce his child support payments to an unidentified individual.
The payment agreement was managed by the Stark County Child Support Enforcement Agency.
On March 20, he pleaded guilty to both federal charges. All in all, the Akron native must pay about $375,000 in restitution for the unpaid income taxes and faces an uncertain amount of time in prison.
Also, his sentencing has been set for July 20. It will be settled in U.S. District Court Judge Christopher A. Boyko’s courtroom.
