Samuel Joseph LaPorta is an American football tight end for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL).

The athlete played at Highland High School before he enrolled at the University of Iowa to play college football.

Playing with the Hawkeyes, the 2022 Kwalick–Clark Tight End of the Year award winner was also named the First-team All-Big Ten (2022) and Third-team All-Big Ten (2021). 

Following his collegiate career, he started his professional career as the 34th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.

After dominating high school football, Sam started his college career, committing to play at the University of Iowa in 2019.

The tight end started slowly in his freshman season with the Hawkeyes and gradually gained his form. He capped off his freshman year playing 12 games with only two starts.

During the sophomore year in 2020, he played eight games with five starts in 2020, recording 27 receptions for 271 yards and one touchdown.

For his outstanding athletic abilities, Sam got honorable mentions of All-Big Ten by the coaches and media and Fourth-Team All-Big Ten by Phil.

Similarly, the Highland native became the starting tight end in 2021, earning him a spot on the Mackey Award Preseason Watch List.

As the 2021 season ended, Sam bagged some of the prestigious honors, including All-Big Ten by Phil Steele, the coaches, and the media. He was also a recipient of the Iowa Hawkeyes Team Hustle Award. 

In his senior season, LaPorta was on the Rotary Lombardi Award and Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. 

He also earned other honorable mentions, including Preseason Third-Team All-American by Phil Steele, Fourth-Team All-American, and First-Team All-Big Ten.

Moreover, Sam was named as one of Iowa’s team captains and won Kwalick–Clark Tight End of the Year.
