On March 5, 2019, Merrill scored the highest career 38 points and secured a victory over Colorado State. As a junior player, he averaged 20.9 points, 4.2 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game.

On November 18, 2020, New Orleans Pelicans was the first team to pick Sam Merrill in the 2020 NBA draft. 

However, Merrill was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of a four-team trade without playing single. Merrill debuted his first international game on February 10, 2021.

In the regular season, he played 30 games for the Bucks. Merrill averaged a score of 3.0 points and 1.0 rebounds in 7.8 minutes per game.
