Marquel Blackwell, the former USF quarterback legend and current running backs coach at the University of South Carolina, has built an impressive football journey.

But anyone who knows Marquel will tell you that none of it would be possible without the rock-solid support of his wife, Sharvettye Frazier Blackwell.

Marquel and Sharvettye have been married for years and are proud parents to three beautiful daughters: Shyeloh, LeQuay, and Shaye.

Raising three girls while constantly moving for coaching jobs is no small task, yet the Blackwell constantly gives their wife full credit for keeping everything together.

In a 2018 interview when he joined West Virginia as an assistant coach, Marquel said,

“I’ve got a very supportive wife. She gets it and understands it. That makes things a lot easier. She’s pretty independent, so she’s been good with it. As long as she’s good, I’m alright.”

He added with a smile,

“My wife really runs the show. I’m here at the stadium all the time, trying to help us get the wins. I tip my hat to her for how she handles things day to day. It’s not easy, especially with little ones. She goes about her work and doesn’t flinch. That makes things easy on me. She’s a champ.”

Those words show just how much mutual respect and admiration exist in their marriage. They truly are each other’s biggest cheerleaders.

Sharvettye’s Background and Strength

Sharvettye was born to Sharon and Andrew L. Frazier Jr. (known as “Blue”) and grew up with her brothers Anddrikk and Alleo.

Her mother worked as a medical assistant and nurse after graduating from Florida A&M University and retired in 1995.

Her father loved basketball, fishing, and coaching.

Tragically, the family lost Andrew in May 2013 and Sharon in January 2014, a heartbreaking double blow that happened within less than a year.

Despite the grief, Sharvettye has channeled her energy into building an impressive career in health and wellness.

She earned a BASc in Athletic Training, a BS in Professional Health Studies, and a Master’s in Oriental Medicine.

Today, she serves as CEO of Frazier’s House of Healing, where she helps others find physical and emotional healing.

Like most coaching families, the Blackwells have moved… a lot.

By 2018, when Marquel took the running backs job at West Virginia, the couple had already relocated six times in the previous ten years.

From high school coaching in the Tampa area to college stops that eventually included Houston (where he was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2019), and now South Carolina, Sharvettye has packed up the family and started over again and again—always with a smile and without complaint.

Marquel’s Path

Marquel Blackwell first made his name at Dixie Hollins High School in St. Petersburg, Florida, leading the Rebels to the 5A state championship game as a junior.

He then became the face of the young University of South Florida program, shattering school records as a dual-threat quarterback and earning a spot in the USF Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.

Undrafted in 2003, he signed with the New York Jets as a free agent and played in one preseason game.

After his playing career ended, he returned to the Tampa area, coached at Freedom High School (one year as OC, two as head coach), and began climbing the college coaching ladder—eventually landing at South Carolina as running backs coach.

Through every chapter, player, husband, father, and coach, Sharvettye has been right there beside him.

Sharvettye Frazier Blackwell isn’t just the woman behind the coach; in many ways, she’s the one making the whole journey possible.
