South Carolina Mom Faces Racist Attacks at Daughter’s Basketball Game, Stands Her Ground

Community members stepped in to support the mom as the situation escalated in the gym.

A mother in South Carolina is speaking out after she faced racist insults during her daughter’s youth basketball game—an incident she says left her shaken but resolute.

Jordan Logan attended the game to support her daughter, Leilani, while holding her infant son, who had received multiple shots earlier in the day and remained fussy.

To soothe him, Logan stood up briefly and stepped aside from the seating area, bouncing him gently so she could continue watching her daughter play.

Instead of understanding, she says several spectators directed racist slurs at her, including calling her a “monkey,” and demanded that she move.

Logan says the confrontation escalated quickly and grew so hostile that another parent intervened to help de-escalate the situation.

It would have been different if someone had asked nicely,” Logan explained afterward.

“But they demanded I move because they said so. That’s when it became about principle.”

According to Logan, the group attempted to report her to a referee and a police officer present at the game.

She says those efforts went nowhere. Rather than back down, Logan chose to remain where she was—standing through the remainder of the game with her son in her arms, despite the physical strain.

They weren’t going to make me move,” she said.

“I stood there the whole time. My arm felt like jelly, but I didn’t care.”

Logan also described being confronted directly by a spectator’s daughter, adding that the exchange drew attention from others in the gym.

While the experience left her disgusted and embarrassed, she says the support from nearby parents and community members helped her through the moment.

I have a Black daughter and a Black son,” Logan said.

“I’ll keep my composure, but I won’t let anyone think I’m a pushover.”

The incident sparked strong reactions online. Friends and community members expressed outrage and solidarity, condemning the behavior and emphasizing that racism—especially in youth sports spaces—remains unacceptable.

One commenter wrote that such conduct should result in immediate removal from events, while others encouraged parents to stand firm and protect their dignity.

Logan says she shared her story not to seek sympathy, but to draw a clear line.

Racism is played out,” she said. “I stood my ground for my kids, and I’ll do it every time.
