Hopena Pokipala, a 30-year-old Kailua native, tragically lost his life on September 20, 2025, following a devastating accident in Waimānalo, Hawai‘i.

While driving a UTV northbound on Hihimanu Street, he failed to stop at a posted sign and collided with another vehicle traveling eastbound on Kalaniana‘ole Highway.

The impact caused his UTV to overturn, ejecting him onto the roadway.

Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, Hopena succumbed to his injuries.

The elderly driver of the other vehicle was also hospitalized in serious condition.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, which has shaken the Windward O‘ahu community.

Hopena Pokipala Loved Surfing And Spent Countless Hours Riding Waves!

Hopena attended Kamehameha Schools before continuing his studies at Santa Barbara City College and Windward Community College.

Later, he pursued International Business at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

He was deeply rooted in the local culture, often seen surfing at Sandy Beach or spending time with loved ones.

Although not widely known for a formal career in the public eye, Hopena’s life revolved around the water, whether fishing off the coast or free diving in the ocean.

He was also the cousin of Southern Oregon University football player Stokes Nihipali-Botelho.

The Hopena’s tragic passing has left a void in the Kailua and Waimānalo communities.

Friends, family, and neighbors have come together to honor his memory, sharing heartfelt tributes.

One of his friends, Keanu Cazimero, wrote,

Hopena Pokipala. Rest in peace my brother. You were taken way too soon from us. Fck brah. I literally just saw you and shook your hand two weeks ago at the beach. I’m so sorry Alie. I am praying for you with every fiber in my body

Likewise, another one paid heartfelt tribute, saying:

Just found out the young man who passed away in Waimanalo last night was Hopena Pokipala. Love and prayers going out to his family.

Memorial service details will be announced by the family, who continue to receive an outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
