Alan Roy Garter Was A Beloved Volleyball Icon!
Alan Roy Garter was a beloved volleyball coach in the Spring Lake, Michigan, community, known for his deep passion for the sport.
He was born in Grand Haven in 1955 to parents Taylor and Beverly Garter.
Al graduated from Spring Lake High School in 1974 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University.
Over the years, he made a lasting impact as a coach at Spring Lake High School, Muskegon Community College, and Inside Out Club Volleyball.
He wasn’t just a coach; he was a mentor, motivator, and a family man.
Moreover, being a Spring Lake Lakers superfan, he supported his alma mater whenever it needed him.
Beyond coaching, Al worked as a salesman for Northland Farms. He enjoyed his retirement by spending time on Big Bass Lake or relaxing on tropical beaches.
Alan Roy Garter’s passing on August 28, 2025, at the age of 69, left his family and community members heartbroken.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Garter; his sisters, Hazel Raddatz and Marjorie Scoon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Stoken, and his brother-in-law David Scoon.
Fans, colleagues, and former students of Alan Roy Garter are pouring out heartfelt tributes across social media and other platforms.
One of his neighbours expressed his sadness and highlighted Alan’s dedication to the sport, saying:
“Boomer” always had a smile and was so supportive of our Spring Lake volleyball teams. I enjoyed running into he and his wife over the years in the community.Â

In keeping with Al’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no formal services are planned.
